Factors Contributing to Rising Restaurant Closures in Singapore’s F&B Sector

by

Singapore’s food and beverage sector is experiencing a period of significant volatility, with over 800 businesses closing in a single month. While new establishments continue to enter the market, many face immediate challenges related to escalating operational expenses, including rent, utilities, and raw materials. Shifting consumer behaviors, such as a preference for overseas spending and more casual dining options, have further pressured traditional restaurant models. These factors, combined with persistent labor shortages, have contributed to a high churn rate within the country’s competitive culinary landscape.

  • Approximately 836 F&B businesses closed in June 2023, representing one of the highest monthly turnover rates for the industry.
  • Rising costs for ingredients, labor, and utilities continue to squeeze profit margins across the sector.
  • High rental rates in both central and suburban areas have made it difficult for many operators to maintain long-term sustainability.
  • A persistent shortage of manpower has led to increased wage competition and operational difficulties for restaurant owners.
  • Consumer spending patterns have shifted toward “revenge travel” and more budget-conscious dining, reducing footfall for mid-tier establishments.
  • Despite the closures, the market remains saturated as nearly 1,000 new F&B entities continue to register every month.

  1. TBH many F&B Establishments including the ones you named, their food is mediocre but so expensive. Alot of these F&B serve lousy food but charge a premium and the worst part, they don't even know that their food is horrible. When you feedback, they will gaslight you and say taste is subjective. Alot of these FnB also food not consistent. Everytime you go, they will taste different because keep changing chef. Some F&B try to come up with unique concept then hire influence to promote on tiktok and survive on the temporary hype then close down when the next trend comes along. Many stalls that actually serves really good food are often those located at very old hawker centers and they are so cheap. Ive eaten at many f&b that recently closed down and i am not surprised they close down.

  2. Lots of people have a dream, they belive in a concept but they dont fully understand the market…
