NATO Marks 75th Anniversary Amid Concerns Over Future US Support and Ukraine Aid

Date:

NATO is commemorating its 75th anniversary in Brussels, but the milestone is marked by significant concerns regarding the alliance’s future stability and its role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Foreign ministers are currently debating a proposal for a five-year, 100-billion-euro military aid fund for Kyiv to ensure consistent support. This initiative aims to institutionalize aid and provide a more predictable framework for defense, amid concerns over potential shifts in U.S. foreign policy and rhetoric regarding member state commitments to collective defense spending.

  • NATO foreign ministers are gathered in Brussels to mark the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty.
  • Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has proposed a 100-billion-euro fund to provide long-term, predictable military support for Ukraine over the next five years.
  • The proposal seeks to move Ukraine’s military aid into a more formal NATO-led framework, reducing reliance on individual national contributions.
  • The meeting occurs amid internal concerns regarding Donald Trump’s comments about defense spending and the future of the U.S. commitment to the alliance.
  • Allies are discussing ways to “Trump-proof” military assistance to ensure Kyiv receives steady support regardless of political changes in member nations.
  • The alliance continues to focus on burden-sharing, with an increasing number of members expected to meet the target of spending 2% of their GDP on defense.

  1. Volker was the U.S. NATO ambassador in the Bush admin during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars so has tremendous responsibility for those debacles. In this interview when he complains and says: "This administration doesn't have a clear goal. They don't have a clear strategy." I thought he was talking about his work during those wars, but it seems he gave himself and his admin a total pass for the total failure and incompetence and is talking about Iran now. France 24 should have pointed out his failure or found a better person to interview. He has no credibility.

  2. All of these liberals that watch DW news are the same people who screamed we must defend Ukraine . Iran has been sending thousands Drones and Missiles to Russia that killed thousands of Ukrainians . Yet they all scream that we are now hurting Iran ..

  3. Young people today ask : why their countries spend 2% of GDP in military weapons but not in foods and medicines from the same taxpayers' money ? The young people today are worried about the Climate Change Crisis, now adding the expensive budgets wasted in buying Military weapons, what will be left for their future in dealing with the inevitable climate crisis and debts?

  4. To the viewers of France 24: This channel is lying to you. Half the American people are Democrats and the other half are Republicans. The guests on this channel bring in strategies who worked with the Biden or Obama administrations, or Democrats. You only hear the perspective of
    democratic America.

  5. The EU should demand that the US vacate all its bases on EU soil … including Greenland.
Canada and the EU can develop and build their own indigenous over-the-horizon radar systems and charge the US $2 billion/year for access to the early warning data.
Australia conducts 11x as much trade with China as it does with the US. Australia should do the same and ban the US bases there too.

  6. Trump doesn’t care about Iran. He cares about manipulating the oil and stock market and his buddies can do insider trading. Iran is completely ancillary to his money making scheme. That’s the way I frame it.

  7. Trump insults EU leaders and allies, tariffs them, bullies them and this guy blames them for not responding back in kind?? This is the reason why he is doing this, because no one pushes back. It's about time they do so!
