Singapore hawkers raise prices by up to S$1 amid rising ingredient and energy costs

Date:

Hawkers across Singapore are increasing the prices of their dishes by as much as S$1, driven by the escalating costs of raw ingredients and utility bills. While some vendors have previously attempted to absorb these additional expenses to maintain affordability for their regular customers, many now find it unsustainable to do so. These price adjustments reflect broader inflationary pressures affecting the local food and beverage industry, as stalls navigate the balance between operational viability and customer retention in a challenging economic climate.

  • Hawker food prices are seeing increases ranging from S$0.10 to S$1.00 per dish to offset rising overheads.
  • The primary drivers for these hikes include the rising global cost of essential ingredients such as cooking oil, meat, and vegetables.
  • Increased energy costs, including electricity and gas tariffs, have significantly added to the daily operational expenses of stall owners.
  • Many hawkers cite the necessity of maintaining thin profit margins as the main reason they can no longer keep prices at previous levels.
  • Despite the adjustments, some vendors continue to offer designated budget meal options to help support lower-income diners.

  1. Will hawkers lower food prices when petrol price drop/ when suppliers stop surcharges? Hawker Association Chair claims there are multiplier effects from delivery surcharges imposed by suppliers. But PAP claims no multiplier effect when GST is raised by 2% points. Haahaa…. why same same but different?

  2. No wonder some hawkers are so happy. The gossips I overheard from "Jab chai perng" uncle "Park cien beh pie" simply means War is not bad. Not sure whether I interpreted it correctly or not. Correct me if I am wrong.

  3. All businesses will go through up and down, hawkers seems to be entitled and expect everyone else to subsidise them. They can do cost cutting like firing workers, etc. like MNC.

Cannot right because everyone helping in the store are family members?😂😂😂 haha

  4. Utilities/energy prices affects ALL businesses and will hence affects all consumers. Look at the diesel prices⬆⬆⬆, which business doesn't rely on logistics? Some businesses that cannot receive support will definitely suffer as consumers tighten the wallets.

  5. I don't understand why people are complaining. The choice is always yours. If one stall increases price, you can always patronize other stalls. If ALL the stalls increase price, then you can jolly well cook your own food (if u really think that's a cheaper option) or eat instant noodle (this one confirm cheapest). People can buy $5-6 for bubble tea but complain abt $5-6 for hawker food. Explain the logic pls 😂

  6. Raise la!!!!!! the most I dun eat outside as much!!! DAMN ANGRY!!! my side that stupid popiah stall from 2022's $1.20 now become $2.50 each!!!!! just within 3 years!!!!! maybe just eat their popiah once or twice in a year will do.. it is not a MUST EAT DUN EAT WILL DIE kind of food.

  7. Increased Delivery fees should affect only the delivery fees and not the cost of food that are not delivered.

Lower revenue is because everyone is feeling the pinch as most consumers are affected by rising transport costs. Increasing food costs will only reduce even more purchasers as office workers will then consider bringing home cooked food instead of eating at food centres.

  8. OK, keep raising. Your customers will remember when you raised in a time of need when everyone was struggling.

Then, when your business dries up, even when you lower your prices, you'll realise you're just not getting business anymore. People are not stupid.

Keep raising and suddenly people will just eat from mid-range diner and not eat hawker food, because they're the same freaking price these days!

  9. If government doesn’t step in to help in this matter don’t think it’s gonna help to better the situation. At the same time seems like a good reason for them to justify raising up the price. Expense keep going up unreasonably. If the government and people don’t care enough to do anything, who’s really keeping track of things?

  10. During the election, empty promises were made to win majority vote. Who you vote is what to get just like USA. The govt had wooed 65% voters into voting for them with motherhood manifesto & 15% tariff negotiation with US.

Did it materalise? Judge for yourself. Million $$ cabinet highest paid in the world is sitting on ivory tower cahoots on common folks on the ground. They cared for their pockets & pension after retiring sucking $$ shamelessly.

Governing like Ching Dynasty to Warlords to Chiang Kai Shek eras of China whereby landlords sublet their farms to farmers to collect rents & food. There are retired hawkers paying stall rentals for $190 under old scheme while subletting it out for $3000. How can food prices be affordable to the poor & middle class? This resembled typical of China during that eras whereby landlords sit to collect rentals. Really shocked & surprise this system works here whereby everyone pretends not to know but win the hearts of hawkers that supports them. Honestly, if my retired parents are enjoying such imperial+Chiang Kai Shek, I will vote for them all the way.

I cherish the 1st generation leaders under MM Lee & his team. Efficient & fair but not now. It seems like rotting from all corners. Give out $1 but took back $1000. CDC vouchers can't last long at most 3 mths. Cost of living, utility & transport keeps moving up. Salary stagnant & CPF 2.5% for the past 40 yrs. Our living stds are spiral downwards. Just like a naked king parading round thinking of wearing the finest silk. Real joke.

The current 4G lack forsight but just fight fire. Provide solutions not problem. Kindergarden children also can read social media. Beat around the bush without solution trying to distract does not work these days. If SG continues to govern in this manner, there is no future for the generations to come. Even century old British monarchy is modernising. Mockery if we still operates business as usual.

  11. The Vice chairman Faye Sai mentioned that she plans to attract tourist and customers to come back on weekends to the hawker centers….hmmm you think we have nothing to do issit? even travel all the way there also need money…instead of lowering rental costs, she adding more cuts to existing wounds
