The potential reduction or repositioning of United States military forces in Europe represents a significant shift in transatlantic security dynamics. As discussions intensify regarding the long-term presence of American troops, particularly in Germany, European leaders are facing increased pressure to enhance their own defense capabilities and strategic autonomy. This shift raises critical questions about the future of the NATO alliance and the extent to which European nations can maintain regional security independently of historical levels of American military support.
- The United States is re-evaluating its military footprint in Europe, citing the need for greater burden-sharing and increased defense spending among NATO allies.
- Germany currently hosts the largest number of American personnel in Europe, serving as a critical logistical hub for operations across Africa and the Middle East.
- European policymakers are debating the concept of “strategic autonomy” to ensure the continent can manage its own security affairs amid shifting U.S. foreign policy priorities.
- A significant withdrawal of troops could impact the local economies of German regions that have hosted American military installations for decades.
- The discussion highlights a broader trend of the U.S. pivoting its strategic focus toward the Indo-Pacific region, necessitating a more self-reliant European defense posture.

It’s best things for EU
Bye Bye EU! We won’t miss you! Good luck against Russia! 😂
The USA has never been Europe's "friend" – more like an abusive spouse – but now they are an open enemy.
You don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
Europe just wanting to stand on its two feet all along it has been enjoying free ride, just stepping up ? Why then blame US when all 80 years nothing Europe has been thinking of. At some point independence for European countries was inevitable
George Washington said we should avoid foreign entanglements. NATO is a money pit and its gotta go. Besides why should our tax money continue paying for the security of people who hate the USA and won’t hesitate to betray us when push comes to shove????
Germany can be great again without US as a safety cushion
European countries want o be treated like adults, they need to learn to protect themselves!
These European countries think they offered some pieces of real estates for the US bases, and they demand whatever they want!
EU should ask UN to check Israel Nuclear Weapons as it developed illegally and keeps secret. Also why not to Revise Israel Borders again so they respect the international laws? Israel bullies EU Turkey Egypt China … Israel thinks it’s above all of us! Also gaslights Germany and manipulate Germany sense of guilt while its own government is a fascist junta today that’s exterminating and committing genocide. How We in the West accept that?
More like the US alone.
As an American, it is hard to listen to Europeans talk about the U.S. It seems to me that Europeans are incapable of understanding the point of view of the U.S. The schizophrenic 'we need them, we don't need them' conjoined with unwarranted critizism is very toxic to any relationship. No body stays in a relationship where they are not wanted.
Finance the Ukrainian defence industry and Europe will have better and cheaper long range missiles.
If the US had consulted the Europeans before, who doesn't believe that someone in Europe would have leaked it.
As a Indian, I don't have much love to the Eurocrats, always preaching restraint but never practicing what they preach. Trying to control the internal policies of a country thru trade barriers and tariffs because they had to abandon their colonies that they couldn't afford to control after WW2. India is no ones tool against anyone else.
U.S. troops need to deploy to Ukraine! They can learn something about how to fight against Russians.
Troop withdrawal? Like back to the USA?
These Europeans know more about what's in Trump's head than Trump himself. Merz simply regurgitated our woke democratic socialist Congress words. Probably because Merz is woke himself. But the words out of Europe are this: "America needs our bases more than we need them", "America was planning to make reductions anyway." I believe they will be proven wrong soon enough. How can America have any certainty that NATO will stand beside America in a conflict? They won't, and this has been proved!
So, you are saying you started the war so we can profit. I think it more like you started the war and we took advantage of it. Cause and effect ?
If the Europeans think that the US is so bad, hostile, and unreliable, perhaps they should invite their Chinese friends to build military bases on European soil. I suspect that wouldn't go well.
2CR is likely going to Fort Knox or Fort Polk. The loss of 2CR is massive for the region.
I'll just say this. The last time multiple European nations went through a military build up period, as they are being forced to now, we had a world war. We were allowed to take charge because we were thought of as the biggest deterrent from further multi-lateral wars taking place.
Having the entire world re-arm themselves only puts US lives at risk. But sure, carry on.
Go Europa!…
The U.S. has always wanted Europe to pay Its fair share.
5,000 soldiers isn't a “significant number”? Nonsense—it's the only combat brigade in Germany and Austria, so this represents a massive loss in terms of deterrence—according to Gen. Hodge, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
What kind of ignoramuses is the public broadcaster presenting as “experts” here again??
Partnership requires at least 2 people. Anytime someone says they are not our partners, you may want to look at both aside of the equation.
Europe could not unify after WWII. What makes you think Greenland is going to do it?
That what u get if u don't learned ur lesson on what happens in ww2 u should necessary build ur own military armed it to the teeth so that no one would dare to attacked u
EU leaders are very short sighted as they need US protection but refuse to
contribute what their obligations ask for. Too selfish are those European countries, especially Spain, Italy and France who want US to fight the Russia and Ukraine war rather than themselves! Why US shall spend billions dollars for providing security to all EU countries for nothing rewards?? Is US the candy Dad for all EU COUNTRIES? EU countries are beneficial from free navigation of Hormuz Strait not USA who does not need to get shipping from the Hormuz Strait!
Maybe for western , they are welcome in Poland 🙂
Ya ya yeah……I wish Europe would for once in their existence actually attempt to tarrif us;To go with all that ungracious chit chat they keep putting out there although I still haven't seen the whole of Europe's countries all put together accomplish even a fraction of all our President ☆Donald Trump★ 🇺🇲 has done for the United States of America but unfortunately it shows just how inconsiderate our former allies really have become when we finally stopped funding their Ukraine war which by the way is not a Nato country…The only thing keeping Europe safe honestly has been U.S.A period point blanc. 🤐🦦👋💯💯💯🫶🪖🛡⚔️🏗🏛🗽🦅
The best analogy to this situation is: Europe is in desperate need of a car but doesn’t want to spend the money to buy one. So Europe becomes a hitchhiker who got picked up by the US and never got off it. For decades Europe has been riding around on the US but instead of contributing money for gas, oil changes or repairs it got bolder and greedier.
Europe began to sell a lot of stuff to the US but limited what the US could it. Then Europe began to charge the US a tariff or fee but it didn’t want the US to charge them anything.
Europe never got its own car because the US was letting them take advantage but now Trump is the new driver.
So Trump corners Europe and demands for it to contribute with operational expenses or for it to get its own car.
Europe becomes enraged curses the driver (Trump) and demands for its free rides. Trump says no and kicked Europe off the car that’s why Europeans are furious with Trump and bad mouth him where ever they go.
So how accurate is this analysis?
This is only the beginning. Don't think that we are going to stop there. It's not over until every one of our valuable troops are out of europe and we leave NATO. We don't need europe, but they need us. The American people have been wanting our troops home for a very long time.
Hopefully they wont get hit by the door on the way out.
Frankly I'm relieved that Trump is taking away his troops, and I wish he'd take the rest. It seems well within the realms of possibility that the USA eventually declares itself an ally of Russia against Europe, and the last thing we want at that stage are tens of thousands of enemy troops embedded here from the start.
Poland is asking for the US to move its troops into its country because they want and appreciate the role the US played in the country.
Furthermore, Morocco and many other African nations are asking and offering the US incentives to move its bases into their regions and it will put the US in a more strategic place in the region so this fallacy that the US is shooting itself in the foot is ludicrous.
So many Americans want to leave the US that Germany can just rent the housing to expats. Older expats will spend more locally. This year is the first year in the history of the US where more people leaving than coming in
Congrats, German taxpayers🎉
The words Merz used were sober and correct. European politicians cannot let Trump set the tone for what is good and proper. I also think it's good to know now to what extreme extent the USA has become completely unreliable as a security partner. It might not be what we want, but it is what is. And we need to know this. If the words of Merz were instrumental in making that clear, then they were well chosen.
It’s funny that NATO’s non compliance to its defense spending was ever mentioned. Yet the panel never failed to portray the USA as an unreliable partner and that its military and economic influence has weakened. It was also mentioned that China is the more stable world power obviously overlooking the goings on in Asia particularly in the South China Sea. If the USA has weakened and is unreliable then NATO should prepare to defend itself without it.
I am so used to it. Always a bunch of not knowledgeable people sitting around the table and talking around and around. Lots of nonsense. That's typically Europe.
Germany's leaders have much bigger mouths than brains. Now European leaders have to go and kiss President Trump's hands. That is their only chance to save Europe.
Good panel discussion once you get past the Trump personality and emotional reactions to his style. In spite of the TDS, you are all acknowledging the same strategic reality: the post-Cold War arrangement is ending. Europe relied on the US security umbrella for decades while under investing in defense, industrial capacity, and energy security. Meanwhile, the US political class — not just Trump — is increasingly focused on debt, domestic pressures, and China. Several of you even admitted this trend predates Trump and will continue after him. That is the real story.
The real question is not whether Europe should become more self-reliant militarily and economically. Everyone on the panel already seems to agree that it must. The question is whether this transition is handled strategically between allies, or driven by emotion and political theater. In the long run, Europe rebuilding defense industry capacity and thinking more independently may actually strengthen NATO — even if the process is uncomfortable.
Wow what great bunch of Trump and US haters you collected. It is easy to grab a bunch of people who agree with your view and then spend 30 mins criticising the other side. Hardly a balanced view anywhere and no debate. Do better DW!
Aren't Europe saying the same thing when Russia invade Ukraine that Russia is struggling? What's going on now?
Close Ramstein to the US …… do not allow warmongers to use European bases
Hes moving the troops to greenland 😂 5:46
