Hungarian Opposition Leader Péter Magyar Challenges Orbán-Aligned President

Date:

Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar is challenging the legitimacy of President Tamás Sulyok, a close ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Magyar, who has emerged as a major political challenger to the ruling Fidesz party, is questioning the president’s standing and calling for systemic reforms. While the opposition aims to weaken the government’s influence over state institutions, legally removing the president remains highly difficult due to the ruling party’s strong parliamentary majority.

  • Opposition leader Péter Magyar is publicly challenging Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok, accusing him of being an Orbán loyalist.
  • The dispute centers on allegations of constitutional irregularities regarding the president’s appointment and past actions.
  • To successfully remove a president, a two-thirds majority vote in the Hungarian parliament is required.
  • Viktor Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party currently maintains a supermajority in parliament, making any forced removal highly unlikely.

  1. So the idea is simple. Clearly rip everything down and build back with accountability, transparency, in the real government structure that serves the people. Canada is in desperate need of something like this as well.

  2. Have you seen the US? Same thing by design with the SCOTUS and many state supreme courts. The SCOTUS is a lifetime appointment so they can knock down anything the people pass no matter what the numbers are. It took the Republicans less than 50 years to destroy the country.

  3. It sounds like the only constitutional crisis is what Orban was able to creep into the Hungarian law books. Democracy should serve all people, not just those who voted in the majority. I applaud Magyar's efforts to begin to unravell Orban's hold, especially by setting term limits on his own position.

  4. It is a democratic reset, one we're very glad about. Peter Magyar is doing what he promised to do. And the way he talks, he is genuinely passionate about making Hungary a functioning democracy. So are his cabinet of experts. I'm Hungarian, I'm watching a ton of Hungarian stuff on this, and Kim Lane Scheppele really is an absolute expert on the situation (I've seen other interviews with her in the past month, she's always on point.)
Please fix the thumbnail though, you have the wrong flag. 😀

  5. Magyar need to make new constitution that people to have highest order so whoever come into power and abuse it, they can go on the streets to protest and force whoever is in power to resign, otherwise there is no system for anyone who come into power to remove him as dictator

  6. It is not a question of IF, but when and how. If we follow moral foundations of politics, he does not represent the people anymore, and he should resign but he would not resign so we will see another test of our institutions. Hopefully within due process.

  7. Hungary needs to implement an admendment into the constitution that any new admendment to the constitution requires to pass a national referendum of a majority so that no future dictators can mess around.
