Former Estonian President Discusses Lessons Learned in Dealing with Vladimir Putin

Date:

Former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves has highlighted key lessons for the international community regarding diplomatic and security relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Drawing from Estonia’s experience, the former leader emphasized that Western nations historically underestimated Russia’s geopolitical ambitions, particularly following the 2008 conflict in Georgia and the 2014 annexation of Crimea. The discussion underscores the necessity of robust military deterrence, cohesive policy-making, and sustained support for Ukraine as critical measures to maintain European security and counter regional instability.

  • Warning signs raised by Baltic and Eastern European nations regarding Russia’s foreign policy objectives were historically dismissed by Western partners.
  • A key lesson highlighted is that diplomatic concessions and passive responses to previous territorial aggressions failed to prevent subsequent conflicts.
  • Strong military deterrence and an enhanced NATO presence along the eastern flank are identified as essential components for regional stability.
  • Providing consistent military and financial aid to Ukraine remains a vital factor in ensuring long-term European security.

  1. A very interesting interview with Toomas Hendrik, it is certainly high time for "Olde Europe" to listen more attentively to Eastern Europe (& it is happening slowly). One family.
May I suggest an addition to these types of interviews – "final thoughts ?" ?

  2. Actually, it's been the major European countries, like France and Germany, that refused to live up to their NATO commitments prior to Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Estonia, however, maintained it baseline 2% even before Putin's 2014 invasion of Crimea.
