India Seeks to Acquire German Submarines to Modernize Its Naval Fleet

Date:

India is currently in negotiations with Germany to acquire six advanced conventional submarines equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology. This potential multi-billion-dollar deal aims to modernize India’s aging naval fleet amid rising security concerns over China’s expanding footprint in the Indian Ocean. For Germany, the partnership represents a significant strategic shift, as Berlin seeks to deepen defense ties with New Delhi and offer a viable alternative to India’s traditional reliance on Russian military hardware.

  • India is seeking to procure six modern conventional submarines under the Project 75I initiative to upgrade its naval capabilities.
  • Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems is a leading contender for the contract, offering a strategic manufacturing partnership.
  • The acquisition focuses on Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, which allows diesel-electric submarines to remain submerged for significantly longer periods.
  • The deal aligns with Germany’s shifting foreign policy, which increasingly favors defense cooperation and military exports to strategic democratic partners in the Indo-Pacific.
  • A key geopolitical driver for India is countering China’s naval assertiveness in the Indian Ocean while diversifying its defense supply chain away from Russia.

  1. India is strengthening its navy with a new generation of submarines designed in Germany – and built in India. The deal, called Project-75(I), is worth around $8 billion. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius says it should be signed this summer. It’s not just about getting the submarines – for India the important aspect is being making them itself.

  2. Индии нужны немецкие субмарины потому что Россия и Сша продают им технологии, а Индия обязательно потребует локализацию производства …
У Германии ничего не осталось кроме возможности продавать свои устаревшие технологии

  3. India is developing its own AIP and wants to retrofit the French Scorpenes with those in the future (first sea trials this year). The French don't have a PROVEN AIP tech on their subs, if they do, they aren't sharing it. But the Germans saw an opportunity and agreed to provide their AIP system along with a new submarine design. So, now the domestic AIP development program will run parallel to the German AIP tech on the new subs and India will learn the latest tech from the Germans. India had a good submarine building program with the Germans in the 80s but corruption got in the way and further collaborations were cancelled.

  4. India's bet on tech blend wont pay off as integration problem persist causing worries for some time now. Its either 100% german or 100% india (which is basically russian) for this deal to be viable.

  5. Germany should know better than selling weapons or weapon designs to states that have a questionable democracy record. By German standards India is more like an elective autocracy than a true democracy.

  6. Germany has a big boot 👢 of United States over its NECK that's why is being forced to part with its Technology. Japan is also being forced to give away it's prized Naval destroyer technology just to sacrifice themselves for the master. 😅😅😅😅
Freaking Slaves. 😅😅😅 The other thing is that these countries don't have cheaper labour and other costs are also high to build domestically. If India will build them these will also get boats to fight against Russia and China 😅😅😅.

  7. India's Delhi might be the new political center for Indo-European bloc by 2049, instead of Brussels or Washington D.C.

Incredible things are happening in BRICS+.

  8. Why is India chasing these German type 214 submarines? They are technologically way behind the French Barracudas (they have still a plain propeller rather than a pump jet propulsion system…) and India is already familiar with French submarine technology, having built several Scorpene submarines.

  9. TAIW❤❤❤❤❤❤❤N. NEEEDDDDDZZZZ to get these and put mukes on them.
Imdia also should form deep relationships with Taiwan, Vietnam, the Phillipines and every single one of China's adversaries.
Israel should be top of the list for India as an ally.

  10. India is a known superpower for 2-3 decades ago. Self-reliant is the key. It designed and built own jet fighters namely the Tejas. It is a 6th generation stealth fighter which India chose to keep it as a secret, reluctant to use them during that brief war with Pakistan. It doesn't come as a huge surprise that India ants to become a naval superpower. It is a natural progression.

  11. lol India doesn’t need it. India is on course to develop this tech within the decade. It’s 8 billion to save some time. India is already building 1 warship every 2 months. Super fast.

  12. India has domestically built/designed/secret Nuclear submarines that can run forever and launch nukes, and has domestically designed aircraft carriers. Why do they need diesel power submarines? And they surely must have technology or scientists to develop these themselves.

  13. It's also good oppertunity for Thysen Kroupp to expand their production of submarines through overseas producers just like Israel doing 🔥.
Thysen Kroupp could explore more shipbuilding and submarines construction here in massive Indian shipyards..
In collaboration with Indian Larsen and Turbo and other Indian companies .. you can make submarines here 40 percent cheaper than building in Germany 🔥🔥. Yes 40 percent cheaper!! In times of war we can ship or export them back to Germany !!Jai Hind 🇮🇳

  14. Oh boy…… looks to me that Germany is a very slow learner. The marine industry is about to learn with India what many other German industries learned with China. Globalization is over. When will Germany catch up with the news?

  15. INDIA ALREADY HAS MORE ARTILLERY TANKS GUNS BOMBS MISSILES DRONES SUBMARINES WARSHIPS RADARS SATELLITES AIR DEFENCES THAN YOU'LL ESTIMATE AND NOT MADE IN CHINA LOCAL TYPE BUT LET IT'S ENEMIES SURPRISE WITHOUT BOASTING EXCESS😂😂😂😂😂😂

  16. Germany too honest ?
The total estimated cost of the AUKUS trilateral defense and submarine program is $368 billion (AUD) over 30 years. While initial spending and specific project components amount to billions.
