Inside the AfD’s Agenda on German History and Remembrance Culture

Date:

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is seeking to reshape the country’s established culture of historical remembrance, sparking intense debate over national identity and education. Critics accuse the party of attempting to downplay the atrocities of the National Socialist era to foster a more nationalist perspective. Conversely, AfD representatives argue that Germany’s current historical focus is overly centered on guilt and that a more balanced appreciation of German history is necessary. This ideological clash continues to influence discussions surrounding school curricula, public memorials, and national heritage.

  • The AfD party is advocating for significant changes to Germany’s “culture of remembrance” (Erinnerungskultur), proposing a focus on positive historical achievements.
  • Critics and historians express concern that the party’s agenda aims to normalize far-right positions and minimize the legacy of the Nazi regime.
  • Party members argue that the current focus on historical guilt hinders the development of a healthy national identity.
  • The debate directly impacts educational policy, the funding of memorial sites, and the public presentation of historical events.

  1. The AfD is leading in national polls and is in on course to win upcoming regional elections while Germany's domestic intelligence agency sees reliable indications that the AfD is right-wing extremist.

  2. Instead of war mongering and vilification of Russia and ignoring your own population's concerns, will obviously lead to viters going for new parties, extreme or otherwise.

  3. It’s an interesting phenomenon, when Germans understood the concept of collective responsibility, written so much about by Hannah Arendt, but in the same time they reject such framing in regards to russia, which has had concentration camps in from of gulag and murdered millions of innocent people and never even accepted this as a fact.

  4. Don't we all know, that AFD is supported by Putin's Russia, and represents Russia's interests here in our Germany (and that in times Russia is in an unofficial war against Germany and other countries). I think it becomes more and more important, to register AFD members and sympathizers as Russian Agents. That would also make many voters think twice about that party…
