Factors Behind the Increase in Cyclospora Parasite Infections Across the US

Date:

The United States is experiencing a rise in infections caused by Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that leads to severe gastrointestinal illness. Typically spreading through contaminated fresh produce such as berries, herbs, and leafy greens, the parasite causes symptoms like prolonged watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue. Because Cyclospora is highly resistant to standard chemical washes and cannot be easily rinsed off, health officials face ongoing challenges in preventing its spread. Treatment generally requires specific antibiotics, and public health agencies continue to monitor outbreaks linked to agricultural products.

  • Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection characterized by watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, and fatigue.
  • Transmission primarily occurs through the consumption of contaminated fresh produce, including leafy greens, herbs, and berries.
  • The parasite is highly resistant to chlorine and other standard sanitizing methods, making it difficult to wash off of food surfaces.
  • Cases in the United States typically spike seasonally during the spring and summer months.
  • Infections require specific stool tests for diagnosis and are generally treated with targeted antibiotics.

  1. The United States has experienced numerous diarrhea outbreaks in modern history. Nowadays, everything has to be existential and dramatized for clicks. For the love of God, pay attention to the news, maintain good health in general, and in the meantime, wash your freaking fresh produce. Removing 90% gives you a better chance than removing 0%. Yes, it may not be a perfect protector, but give yourself a chance! One of these days, we are going to have a REAL health crisis, and nobody will listen.

  2. It’s from water. Elderly people are at risk.
Wash spinach, etc… cook all your greens. Greens should be washed thoroughly and not eaten raw if you can avoid it.
If it’s in the meat – avoid all ground meats.

  3. Doctors making videos have said that sulfa drugs actually are not the only treatment, just the first choice. Cipro reportedly is the second choice, for example.

How to clean veggies was also described elsewhere, along with the suggestions to cook veggies like coleslaw mixes. I think this man perhaps isn’t really up to speed on this topic (and he’s not a health care provider either), and just enjoys being skeptical. For those of us at greater risk of being unable to fight off such infections, he’s no help imo. Very disappointing.

  4. Confusing interview with cryptic answers. Sweet Jesus. Here’s what you say: symptoms, treatment, route of infection, reservoir, mortality. A backyard crow communicates better.
