You can say Trump is a bully, but he's looking for deals good for the U.S.. That's his job. You can't do that effectively if you're a pushover. Fact is, the U.S. GDP is about 32 Trillion USD, whereas Canada's is a mere 2.4 Trillion. Heck, just California's is almost twice as much as that at 4.2 trillion. If you want access to a huge market, it's going to cost you to play ball. If you don't want to deal with Trump, just buy and build Canadian. He's actually doing Canada a favor in a way.
Oh, I don't know about the U.S. being able to hurt Canada more that Canada can hurt the U.S. If we wanted to, we can impact their power grid in the east, the water availability in the west, and something called 'potash' which might have a little impact on U.S. crops. Then there's raw materials like aluminum, steel, softwood lumber, and strategic minerals. Oh, and oil. In many of those instances, we don't even have to mess with them financially. There is no longer a need for Canada to adhere to the CUSMA rules. I'd encourage them to talk for 3 weeks and then announce the counter tariffs to come into affect 1 minute after the USA tariffs. Canada should not be concerned about a tariff value of equal sum. Rather hit Trump where it hurts and be offensively high, so high Trump will seriously consider cancelling his planned tariffs and maybe the whole strategy.
I'd suggest a rolling tariff on oil equal to the discount between WTI and WCS at the average value of last week’s discount. No oil tariff if America bids up the value of WCS to match WTI. 2 add 5 cents to the cost of electricity that is a value not great enough to try to get power from someone else. 3 A $200 per metric ton on potash. Yes this value of trade far exceeds what USA hit and that is part of the point.

Canadian here. Our family is already banning US groceries, autos, travel and other goods. I won't buy US booze, no matter what's on the shelves. Canada did not target US autos until after the US targeted Canadian autos. Canada is using legal retaliation for the illegal US tariffs, that are a violation of our existing trade agreements.
