Péter Magyar Emerges as Major Opposition Challenger to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

Until the approval of the new constitution and the new voting laws (1-2 years from now), the EU has nothing to fear. Péter Magyar is still very reactive to his voter base, and the voters are very forceful and reactive too. He wanted to suggest his own candidate, Judit Polgár for Tamás Sulyok's position but people have felt this nomination to be too forceful because – during the elective race – he stated that the new candidate will be decided by the voters. He only suggested her but this maneuver alone costed him ca. 2-4% of his voter base in a single week. He is walking on egg shells basically.

The new 70-year mandatory retirement age applies to the constitutional court (also all replaced in one fell swoop), not to the president. The president was terminated much more unceremoniously: “On the day following the entry into force of the seventeenth amendment to the Constitution, the mandate of the incumbent President of the Republic shall terminate.” He couldn’t have blocked any new legislation, his veto powers are easily overruled. It also wasn’t in his character (he immediately signed his own dismissal). Maybe interview experts who get the basics right? Just a thought.

DW is very eurocratic. They are making this because Magyar isn't as "pro-European" as they initially believed. While yes, he is better than Orban, he still is a patriot and an anti-federalist. He no longer blocks EU aid packages to Ukraine, but he doesn't make Hungary join them.

The difference is people now more active in politics to voice their opinions. The smallest unpopular decisions are met with baclash and drop in support and when these happens Magyar usually backs off.

Incorrect Súlyok was not 70 years old he just sing a new an amendment to the Fundamental Law regarding he will be not President of the Republic in Hungary that it. Try to do a little more research before you post your video full of false statements. Age limit of 70 for constitutional court justices.

fact error: Sulyok was removed with a direct constitutional amendment ending his term. The 70 year age limit was introduced for constitutional court judges, which Sulyok used to be before he became a president, but isn't anymore.

The constitutional court contains Orbán loyalists too, and removing a portion of them will allow the new government to appoint people who are not loyal to the Orbán mafia. There are people criticizing both moves, but there isn't a really clean way to remove loyalists. The hope is that the newly appointed judges and president will be truly independent, and not Magyar loyalists.

So far the actions of the new government seem reasonably good and honest, but the true test will be the reform of the unfair election system, and the new budget that shows true priorities. Hungary is still hopeful, the "honeymoon period" didn't end yet.

its a obvious he is a young and second version of orban and tisa is second fides. nothing surprising that one that authocrat was replaced by anther , specially when he was originally the member of the same party before. orban could be proud on his succesor. its a continuation and soon tisa and fides could merge. hungarians share the same mentality with russians- they cant live without strong authocrat above them

That professor lady, she is totally clueless about the changes in the Hungarian Base Law (constitution), as the removal of the president, Mr Sulyok (whose name the reporter is pronouncing wrongly, of course) was done not on an age basis, which I would say totally disqualifies her to claim she is an expert, as she doesn't even know the facts.
In return, this reflects badly also on DW who failed to do even a basic fact check…

I am in Hungary and I hate this piece. Hungarians voted in a supermajority because of these reforms and now some anonymous "outside observers" are worried that the reforms are "too much". They can't complain enough — Orban is corrupt and must go, the system put in place is anti-Democratic and anti-liberal, but when concrete reforms are put in place, they complain about that too.
Peter Magyar going after 16 years worth of corruption is not an "abuse of power", it is exactly what Hungary wants and needs. This DW News item is seriously flawed and hypocritical.
What are these horrible "strongman tactics"? He has limited the position of prime minister to 2 terms, effectively negating any chance of Orban coming back. It also limits his own term in office. He put age limits for positions of power, while certainly the US could benefit from the same treatment, and many countries would love to get rid of career politicians. He set up a corruption council to claw back all the money stolen from the Hungarian people to benefit the oligarchs and "friends of Orban" alone. The EU has withheld funds under the Rule of Law for Hungary's refusal to allow financial audits under Fidesz and that is due to the massive corruption. Now when Magyar wants to hold those robber barons accountable, they say he is a strongman?? It's difficult to listen to this and think that DW has any credibility.
