Iceland occupies a strategically crucial position in the North Atlantic, situated within the GIUK (Greenland-Iceland-UK) gap. As NATO’s only member state without a standing military force, the country relies on foreign allies for defense while managing increasing security concerns in the Arctic region. Heightened regional tensions, alongside vulnerabilities in critical undersea infrastructure such as telecommunications cables, have prompted Iceland to enhance its surveillance, police preparedness, and defense cooperation with NATO partners to safeguard its maritime territory and vital communication links.
- Iceland sits within the GIUK gap, a key naval corridor between the Arctic and the Atlantic Ocean.
- As a founding NATO member, Iceland does not maintain a standing military and relies on alliance partners for air policing and defense.
- Undersea communication cables traversing Icelandic waters represent critical infrastructure vulnerable to potential disruption or sabotage.
- Increased Arctic maritime activity and geopolitical competition have renewed focus on Northern Atlantic security dynamics.
- Iceland is expanding national coast guard surveillance, civil security measures, and alliance coordination to address emerging regional risks.

Do you think Iceland is an Overhyped, Overpriced Tourist Trap?
Yeah. How about ya'll everyone else stop being aggressive 😆 Starting with Putin. Then a nation of a size of tiny Italian village wouldn't need to been to be armed to the teeth. Also, Iceland contributes with money.
Obviously Iceland will be occupied in case of war, again.
But this time brits will not be included as they are not even regional power.
just get nukes,
Iceland need FREEDOM
Oh yes. T. Rump drives away all US former friends towards new military bonds with outher countries. No one can understand Us anymore. Its ruled by a selfish madman. Like Putin and the kings in Turkey and Israel😢
You may be the next….!!!
Iceland better be nice and kiss Trump's orange rump or the US will declare them a national security threat due to having mutton of mass destruction.
393,000 people, accounting for age and health. They can't field a military that means anything. Exports mean nothing so unless Russia wants to make it a base…
EU welcomes Iceland! 🇪🇺🤝🇮🇸
I'd personally stop the Untied States from going after Greenland & Iceland, we States in the North have a special relationship with our Northern Brothers.
To be fair, that whole NATO mission statement really went to the wayside in 1961 when Portugal was attacked by India, Portugal a founding member of NATO was told to pound sand, and it lost a City full of Citzens and the lands around it they built and controlled for 500 years. NATO is all about the US and always has been.
I think DW’s gotta be the only public news channel to have comments allowed
I'm gonna recommend The Rest is Politics podcast with their prime minister. Very interesting.
Iceland still under USA occupation since 1941, and that’s not a problem.
I dont care about GEO location, Iceland should also spend 2% and have their own military.
Very good topo
Trump Didn’t Destroy America — He Revealed Its Moral Rot!
You (Americans) are very sick…

We gotta face alien intervention to figure out that fighting each other does no good.

Honestly European has zero chance individually, in competing against giants like the US and China.
Even the biggest economy in Europe Germany have a zero chance to stand between the two giants.
It is only through a United European Federation one entity, one set of rules that there is a chance for European to stand as a formidable giant between the other giants and play the game with its own rules.
The US is NOT all of NATO
Its true that Trumps América is shaking things up, and is now motivating this EU referendum in Iceland. Another mechanism is the threat of tariffs, which can really hurt a small economy wich is dependent on trade. Trump is really making the world a worse place, also for Americans
(Shadowed Banned) The only Country that might possible Attack Iceland is America??…..🤔🏴☠🤠
they have a swat unit of around 60 operators and a coast guard of 150 soldiers. coast gaurds counts as millitary.
so they kinda just extremely small
Being American and MAGA , We will take Iceland by force ,and they will surrender to our bombs , we need your resources for free and we will take it all .

America 🇺🇸 is loosing support and trust all over world!
PRESIDENT TRUMP will definitely ENLARGE the US as he promised🎉🎉🎉
Why can't Iceland start their own military,
joining EU means the death of island as a unique country.
iceland needs diversity
I honestly think the whole thing with Trump threatening to take Greenland is just a chess move to get Greenland for militarized against Russia (not the US), since Greenland seemingly wasn't taking Russia seriously.
The US is running $2 trillion a year deficits and almost $40 trillion in debt. We can't afford to hold up NATO and the world order on our own for much longer. Either we have stepped withdrawals from the world or it all collapses when the debt bubble bursts. Europe needs to spend the trillions of euros on defense now! Now ten years from now. Now!
1:43 I ROFL here 😂😄
US first active cold war era bases that are left like US can use and send it's military ask countries that we are here to protect but why does the need full country countries infact be happy if US come with their military us can build air force and military and submarine base there
I'ts not enough trying to defense your self YOU MUST! Or Russia will eat you up!
What do you think: Can Iceland still rely on NATO or would moving closer to the EU be a smart move? If you're interested in what Russia is up to even further up north, make sure to check out our episode on Svalbard – Putin's trump card in the Arctic: https://youtu.be/Eg_9xIioipI
Greenland is a 'no brainer' the US wants Greenland to hide a small army of nuclear tipped cruise missiles, just like they intended to do during Project Ice-worm in the early 1960s. There are a lot of Russian and Chinese submarines patrolling under the Northern Ice Caps. The reason the US wants 'ownership' of these bases is because if they decide to covertly deploy nuclear weapons into Danish territory, the will not have to notify either the Dane or Greenland authorities. This is so obvious what they are doing.

No mention in this report of the Cod Wars. Britain lost the Cod Wars because despite the Cold War, Iceland leveraged its vital strategic position. Iceland threatened to leave NATO and evict a crucial U.S. military base, prompting the United States to pressure Britain into submission. This forced the UK to accept Iceland's expanding maritime boundaries.
As an American citizen let me profusely apologize for what Trump is putting the world through.
Iceland… Canada and all the rest of NATO, we got your back.
Kyo
There never was military competition in the arctic. Just surveillance, but because of America there is about to be.
