UK Millionaires Call for Higher Wealth Taxes to Help Fight Poverty

Date:

A growing group of wealthy individuals in the United Kingdom is calling on the government to increase taxes on extreme wealth to help combat rising poverty and support public services. Members of organizations such as Patriotic Millionaires argue that existing tax structures disproportionately favor capital over labor, contributing to economic inequality. Proponents suggest that implementing a targeted wealth tax on high-net-worth individuals could generate billions of pounds in additional revenue, providing crucial funding for healthcare, infrastructure, and social safety nets across the country.

  • Wealthy campaigners in the UK are advocating for higher taxes on fortunes exceeding specific wealth thresholds to address poverty.
  • Advocates argue that capital gains and high fortunes are taxed at lower effective rates than income earned through traditional labor.
  • Proposed wealth taxes aim to generate additional revenue to fund public infrastructure, the National Health Service, and social welfare programs.
  • Economic discussions focus on balancing tax policy to mitigate growing wealth inequality while maintaining economic stability.

  1. It's absolute nonsense. It's spearheaded by an ex footballer called Gary Lineker who literally fought with our tax department (called HMRC) not to pay his fair share of tax, and now that he sees the pitchforks are coming for people like him, he is pretending to want to pay tax, to try to psychologically trick his countrymen. The French guillotined people for less.

  2. Tax wealthy, wealthy leave, howabout go through your expenditure, cut immigation expenses if you cant afford to move to the uk its not for you, bring back industry, insyead of paying for ivf and abortions invest in entrepreneurs, lastly accept the Universal healthcare is a failure and copy germmay's two tier model, do a full examination on who is in social housing amdvweather they should be, increase penalties on crime. Lots of wealthy moved to dubai. Im sure if you imposed, a system where tbe more taxes you pay younger to decide where it goes, people would pay.more

  3. First, if the millionaires want to pay more tax they should just pay more. They don't need to put a law in place, just pay more. Second, if England stops spending on their money on their legals and actually spent money on actual citizens for their country, then we wouldn't have this problem either

  4. Paying more taxes is just giving Politicans and bureaucrats more money to mismanage. Britain, like all European countries, needs fewer regulations, less woke ideology, and a focus on creating value and managing the country's income in a productive manner. The tax should be the same flat % that everybody pays, including the same % number for companies, because now it's so easy to avoid paying taxes because benefits and punishments are all over the place

  5. Honestly, there shouldn't be much of a debate. Make it mandatory to either have millionaires/billionaires direct fund social projects (infrastructure, health care, education, etc.) with some tax advantages vs being taxed at an ever increasing progressive tax rate year after year. The response from that labour guy that "this will slow down the economy" is absolute nonsense and tone-deaf…

  6. No evidence? The weathy is selling and the number of richie are going down in UK. The misinformation keeps spreading in UK. That why they always make wrong decision like leaving EU.

  7. What bs the title of this, "please tax us" is. Give it away vs saying you want to be taxed. Sure, pay more taxes (and watch them STILL go to the ushe places, not to the most needed) 😢 but the hype on this is BS 😂

  8. Unfortunately as an English person I know that the poor & especially people on PAYE. Pay any were from a minimum well of over 50% tax & the tax is the highest since ww2 & the rich can afford to avoid paying almost all tax.
As for the UK government I have letters from the PM's office ( Rishi sunsak PM ( it's government policy not to enforce the law))( starmer's PMs office ( their is nothing the pm can do about criminal acts committed by labour politicians (eg Andy Burnham))) & all the political party/press/TV have been contacted & given copies of the documents. No answer from everyone.

  9. To just maintain the "status quo" (i.e. to prevent inequality from worsening), the positive feedback loop known as the Matthew Effect ("the rich get richer and the poor get poorer") must be counterbalanced by a corresponding negative feedback loop, such as wealth taxes or equivalent measures.
