Climate Change and “Super El Niño” Combine to Drive Extreme Weather Events

Date:

Global weather patterns are experiencing heightened disruption as natural climate phenomena like El Niño interact with ongoing human-driven climate change. The arrival of a strong El Niño event, characterized by warmer Pacific Ocean temperatures, amplifies global thermal baselines already elevated by greenhouse gas emissions. This combination leads to unprecedented sea surface temperatures, extreme weather events worldwide, and severe ecological strain, including widespread marine heatwaves and coral bleaching.

  • El Niño is a recurring weather pattern caused by warmer-than-average ocean surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
  • Global climate change elevates baseline global temperatures, increasing the likelihood of record-breaking heat during strong El Niño cycles.
  • The combination of elevated ocean temperatures and atmospheric warming intensifies extreme weather events, including heavy precipitation, storms, and severe droughts.
  • Warming ocean waters contribute to marine heatwaves, posing critical threats to aquatic life, coral reef systems, and global fish stocks.
  • Climate scientists monitor these compounding effects to improve early warning systems and assess ongoing risks to global agriculture and infrastructure.

  1. It's not climate change it's something that has been happening for centuries and the forest fires in Spain and other mediterranean it's you and your swiss and swedish friends.

  2. Respectfully, this is misleading. El Niño has only just started. NOAA upgraded from Watch to Advisory on the 11th of June 2026, and current forecasts have it peaking between November 2026 and January 2027, with a decent chance of a very strong event.
That timing matters, because the global temperature response lags the peak by several months. The El Niño of 2015 to 2016 gave us record warm 2016. The event of 2023 to 2024 gave us 2024. Hot summers follow El Niño years. They don't precede them.
So framing this summer as an El Niño summer is a year early. 2027 is the one to watch.

  3. A quick fix is another Lockdown. During the Lockdown in 2020-2021, the Air was cleaner, the temperature was cooler and the amount of C02 and harmful gasses was lower. It shocked scientists. That the Lockdown really cooled the planet and mother nature was Happy!.. 🙂

  4. This year the summer felt longer than ever before! I'm all for reducing carbon but doesn't anybody find it strange that nobody talks about warming caused by our own current technology?

Never in the history of humanity have we created so much extra heat with our multiple cell phones, Ipads, (gaming) laptops, WiFi routers, WiFi enabled appliances and peripherals, electric vehicles, billions of cellphone towers and data centers On top of that we microwave the Earth with 18.500 Satellites in orbit with more on their way!

What I'm trying to say is never in history has one person created so much heat energy besides our body's that's not for cooking or heating! And never before have we had 8.3 Billion people who are constantly online!

Makes it hard for me to believe that lowering carbon emissions is the only solution to the rapid warming of this planet

Am I alone in this??? Or have we already given up and surrendered to whatever may come 😮
