Dispute Over Military Conscription Deepens Societal Divisions in Israel

Date:

The debate over mandatory military service in Israel has intensified social and political divisions following legal challenges to exemptions historically granted to ultra-Orthodox men. While conscription is mandatory for the majority of Israeli citizens, full-time religious scholars have long received deferrals. Amid heightened military commitments and personnel demands, public calls for equal burden-sharing have increased, placing significant pressure on the governing coalition and highlighting longstanding cultural rifts between secular and religious segments of society.

  • Israel’s Supreme Court ruled that the state must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men, ending decades of blanket exemptions.
  • Proponents of universal conscription argue that national defense responsibilities should be shared equally across all sectors of society.
  • Ultra-Orthodox community leaders maintain that full-time religious study is essential to Jewish identity and cultural preservation.
  • The issue has created significant political strain within the government coalition, which depends on the support of religious parties.

  1. Germans and Jewish Israel are linked to the Genocide of Palestinians. DW won't dare question their Bundestag's pro genocide policies. It's just a whitewashing attempt to distract their complicities with the Jewish war criminals in Occupied Palestine.

  2. "can you recruit someone who does not want to be recruited" – yes you can. Because no one wants to be recruited. These that want – they make it their career or sign a contract. Literally anyone else does NOT want to be recruited and yet they still are . What a bunch of losers. Covering with women and other men to protect them. You are 1/3 of the population. Soon you will out reed the rest of it that keeps you safe. We'll see what your enemies do then

  3. All Israelis should share in the protection of the country. Not just the Haredim, but also the Arab Israelis. If they don't share in all the responsibilities of the citizenry, they should not let them vote. Let's see how fast they all enlist if you tell them that.

  4. Israel, a 3 tier caste country. The average Israeli thinks discriminating against Palestinians are fine because they’re ‘other,’ and they think it’s unfair to be discriminated against by the ultra orthodox. No insight into their behaviour and beliefs at all. Incredible that they can study the book 10 hours a day and have zero insight into themselves.
