The proposed 14.9 billion dollar acquisition of U.S. Steel by Japan’s Nippon Steel faces substantial political and regulatory challenges in the United States. Despite Nippon Steel’s pledges to invest heavily in domestic facilities and honor existing labor agreements, the transaction has encountered bipartisan resistance citing national security and domestic industrial sovereignty. The deal remains under formal review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, leaving the future of the multi-billion dollar industrial partnership in question.
- Nippon Steel’s planned 14.9 billion dollar buyout of U.S. Steel is undergoing a national security review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).
- U.S. political leadership has expressed opposition, maintaining that vital domestic steel manufacturing should remain under American control.
- The United Steelworkers union has opposed the sale, raising concerns about long-term job security, collective bargaining, and plant operations.
- Nippon Steel has committed additional capital investments into U.S. mills and promised to maintain current production capacity without immediate layoffs.
- Proponents argue the merger would provide necessary capital to modernize aging facilities and reinforce trade alliances with Japan.

Should Canada reduce its F-35 order and buy Gripens instead?
A symbol of trust? Lmao more like Airforce Gucci, marketed by Trump
We Swedes would be thrilled to expand our cooperation with our nordic friends the Canadians. Let's expand trade in general.
Rafale gripen and eurofighter are best
I know we are on the hook for 16, and there was news that we had put money down on 'long lead items' for another 14. So that is possibly 30 jets with money already down on them. I would say leave it at that (so we don't have to pay out anything for contract breaking), and then turn to the Gripen to fill out the rest of what we need. Heck, they are cheaper so we could probably get more of them then if we just stuck with the original idea of 88 F-35's, and we would get the chance to build them and possibly export. That would go a long way towards helping rebuild our defense industrial base.
CANADA SAY NO TO ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING FROM USA ! !
Faced with American bullying, the US may soon resort to a "false flag operation" similar to Japan's use of pretexts for aggression against China from 1931 to 1937. The only way for the Canadian people to defend themselves is to purchase J-35 fighter jets, KJ-500 early warning aircraft, Y-9 electronic warfare aircraft, and PL-15 air-to-air missiles from China (whose accuracy and inescapability far surpass the US AIM-120). They should also demand that China transfer YJ-18 anti-ship missiles (capable of sinking any US aircraft carrier within a 2000-kilometer range). Only China can provide a comprehensive air force system to counter US aggression, at only 50% of the cost of the US system. The Canadian people should now completely abandon any illusions: NATO is a paper tiger, a puppet of figures like Mark Rutte who sold European interests to the US. The US has become a bloodthirsty, aggressive nation (like the Soviet Union and Japan during World War II). And European allies, like Chamberlain and Daladier betraying Czechoslovakia, are turning a blind eye to US aggression against Canada. The Chinese people respect Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Canadian people's heroic struggle against American aggression!
Buy Chinese. Better, Cheaper
Australia 🇦🇺 stands with Canada 🇨🇦 its citizens and PM Mark Carney
As a Canadian I hope we tell the US where to stick their planes and buy the Gripen instead. Then improve the Gripen beyond the F35
The Gripen would be fabulous if we can overcome the license-built GE engine. The license gives the U.S. veto power over sales by engaging the ITAR rules.
CANCEL the F35 and go Gripen or Rafael
America should totally kill the trade deal with Canada and some of these other countries who believes they're better than us
Goodbye NATO
Goodbye Canada
Canada would be crazy to buy weapons from any country that is threatening to invade them even if it's "just a joke"
The Gripen E/F had really good EW
but if you want penetration in hostile airspace you send the Saab A3 in front of the Gripen
Buy F35 minimum number to protect CDN jobs. Sign with SAAB for maximum. Mixed fleet can compare value over time.
Yet David Eby went out and purchased ferries from China under slave labor.
Buy the planes. The US still our biggest partner!
Buying the Gripen will give many high end jobs. SAAB also offered a co-development deal where the aircraft can be improved over time, where Canada can make the upgrades and sell their new solution to other Gripen owners globally.
Do we need F35 in a modern warfare? Would F35 make any change to Ukraine if they had these?
Would a mix of 5. Generation fighters, and 4th work horses be the right mix?
I wish that Rolls Royce and Saab would join forces to look at creating RR powered Gripen.
They would sell thousands of units I bet if they can make it work.
Maybe they already have made a start on this idea?
In Ukraine-Russian war most planes were destroyed while on the ground. Here Gripen has a big advantage. It can land and take off from any straight strip of road of around 3 km and requires a smaller crew. So its easyer to hide it while on the ground, it dose not need to be in a miliatary base that is surveilled all the time from satellite.
First, order of F-35s are paid for, second order long lead time items are paid for. Remember the Saab GoldenEye AWACS is designed for a Bombardier airframe and the electronics to work with Gripens and we are going to build them.
That’s a really great decision for Canada !!🇨🇦
USA should not have the right to sanctions against any country it should be the world should isolate USA Donald Trump and should not buy any defence items
No one should be buying military hardware from the USA , THEY CAN NO LONGER BE TRUSTED
There are other options in the market but they are 1 generation behind. f35 is better than any other plane right now. That's a fact. You don't see it and it sees you.
Guess who builds a ton of parts for the F-35? Take a wild guess.
Iranian drones are cheap
The French Rafale can be a consideration as well
Let Canada economically unite with China and buy j-35. 😆
As a Swede, I believe the Gripen E is a better aircraft, and Saab will soon have an unmanned wingman ready. However, I don't think Canada will back out of the order; they might just be waiting for a new US president.
Good! Their Chinese madejets will b3 easy to shoot down😉
When will Canada make a decision?
No one should be buying the F-35 anymore.
You go Canada…. What will you buy…more F-5s, F-18S….. your home country typhoons….
You completely missed the biggest and most striking part of Canada even considering cancelling the deal which is that Canada was a partner in developing the F-35 in the first place, investing hundreds of millions of dollars. The F-35 came from the JAST/JSF program and part of the deal was that for the F-35 to be developed at all would be a joint, rather crowd-funded program in the first place. some 15% of the total value of each F-35 is from British components (far more than 15% in the UK's own F-35B Variant), and America only has the F-35 at all because of the UK and Canada co-funding, co-testing, and co-developing the jet.
Therefore Canada isn't just turning down one deal to choose a better one, it is abandoning hundreds of millions of dollars already invested because the US tried to absolutely shaft them on the deal. To the extent that the previous deal proposal was so corrupt and unfavourable to Canada that the political party in Canada who negotiated it lost power.
Kind of essential context, wouldn't you agree?
the deal for the F-35 should 100% be scrapped the F-35 was NO deal it was overpriced at the start and the price just keeps going up its expensive to fly expensive to maintain it is NOT fit for purpose it doesn't fly well in cold weather WE GO A LOT OF THAT and the F-35 can be shut off and will not fly if the USA gets there panties in a bunch the Griffin a better aircraft it every way
The F35 may have more bells and whistles and on paper be the superior aircraft to the Grippen, but the Grippen has things the F35 doesn’t have like reliability and no DRM that prevents the aircraft from starting up if it doesn’t get authorization from the U.S. authorities. From a pure sovereignty and territorial integrity standpoint the Grippens are better. And for the foreseeable future that matters more than if the plane can operate at night on a covert mission to take the Venezuelan president.
Eurofighter is too expensive?
Euro fighter
Trump said publicly that US would sell de-tuned aircraft for export. That’s why Israel has deals to improve every aspect of the plane
Imagine Carney buys the J15 J35 J22 from China instead lol
学中文😂
I don't think US care about that,
Because the demand for F35 in the world is so high. Other countries have been waiting for more than 10years. So i guess they are the lucky ones by the end;)
The Grippon is a nice plane too…
Why not create Canadian one
Weldone Canada 👍
