Iceland Rejects EU Accession Talks

Date:

Iceland has confirmed its decision not to pursue accession negotiations with the European Union, opting to maintain its current relationship with the bloc. The government cited the importance of preserving national sovereignty, particularly concerning its vital fisheries and agricultural sectors. Despite rejecting full EU membership, Iceland continues to maintain close economic and political ties with European partners through its participation in the European Economic Area and the Schengen Agreement.

  • Iceland has reaffirmed its stance against resuming talks for European Union membership.
  • Key concerns regarding sovereign control over domestic fishing quotas and agriculture remain central to the decision.
  • Iceland originally initiated membership negotiations in 2009 before suspending the process in subsequent years.
  • The country retains access to the EU single market through the European Economic Area (EEA) and remains part of the Schengen zone.

  1. Good for them 👏.
European union is an unmitigated disaster. Now Canada or our "leader " wants to join the European union.
Total disaster going to cost Canada big money. Again.
Canada is in North America, someone forgot to tell the Canadian prime Minister.

  2. EU isn't perfect but no European country on its own can be stronger than USA (having 52 countries), China, or Russia. Looking for unity when missiles are coming down through your roof, or during a financial crisis will be too late. Europeans must be coordinated and aim to be the most advanced and developed area in the world. Having a fragmented Europe means living on a fragile continent. Hopefully, the fact that Iceland didn't join would help EU improving itself and be more attractive to the current EU members and Iceland.

  3. Wow, the whackadoos (or bots) are out in force today. Iceland needs to decide what's best for them. I'm just hoping they got all the information and not sunshine blown where the sun don't shine by either side.

  4. The bizarre thing about this is that Icelanders appear to be happy about being part of the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Schengen area, which means following most of the rules of the EU Internal Market and Schengen without participating in the political processes which decide the rules. The people decide, of course – but it is hard to avoid the thought that widespread misinformation about what is actually already the case plays a role in this.

  5. Iceland probably doesn't need European factory trawlers fishing in their territorial waters and destroying the fishery like they have in other places like the Canadian cod fishery. Iceland has been using their fish resources sustainably for centuries now and it provides a good living for their people. I visited there a few years ago via sailboat including a stop a Vestmannaeyjar island on my way to Europe and it is a fantastic place.

  6. Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland belong to the European Economic Area (EEA), the Schengen Area, and the European Single Market; these three countries are closely linked to the European Union (EU) and already apply European law within their territories. So, a word of warning to EU opponents: don't get too carried away.

  7. The islanders acted wisely… the EU's meddling in all areas of life is overreaching and unacceptable… this bureaucratic monster must go, otherwise the EU will be history in a few years..

  8. The EU is in decline due to the arrogance of its leadership, which ignores the mood and will of the citizens.
Why would anyone want to join such a union? Not even France manages to form a stable government or curb its national debt.
    😂
