Assessing the Impact of the Global War on Terror on International Security 25 Years Later

Date:

An evaluation of the global War on Terror examines the long-term geopolitical and security consequences of post-9/11 military interventions and counterterrorism policies. While international intelligence efforts and targeted operations dismantled al-Qaeda’s core command and prevented several large-scale attacks, prolonged campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq incurred massive financial costs, extensive civilian casualties, and deep regional instability. Security analysts assess that although domestic defensive measures have substantially improved, the decentralization of militant networks and the emergence of groups like ISIS indicate that persistent security threats remain across the globe.

  • Major military campaigns conducted in Afghanistan, Iraq, and broader regions resulted in hundreds of thousands of civilian and military casualties alongside trillions of dollars in expenditures.
  • The degradation of core al-Qaeda leadership successfully disrupted the group’s centralized ability to orchestrate complex international attacks.
  • Prolonged conflicts and state collapse contributed to political vacuums that fostered the rise of the Islamic State and independent regional offshoots across the Middle East and Africa.
  • Counterterrorism legal frameworks, international intelligence cooperation, and global surveillance infrastructure underwent systemic and permanent expansions.
  • Security specialists debate whether decades of global counterterrorism policies successfully eliminated extremist threats or merely dispersed violent extremism into more decentralized networks.

  1. United States military is the biggest terrorist who killed women in iraq by throwing them out of their home. 😢😢 biggest terrorist sponcer State is United States who supported terrorists financially against Soviet union in afganistan and now these terrorists are attacking india and United States supporting pakistan 😐😡

  2. If the US State Department, the CIA, and DW could not, should local democracy in these countries be given a chance? For example, free Imran Khan and help democracy in Pakistan, and stop breeding more such groups through the CIA's Cold War.

  3. Why western countries don't consider Pakistan as safe heaven of Terrorists, Hundreds of UN Designated terrorists lives freely in Pakistan. Osama Bin Laden also lived many years near military camp of Pakistani Army near Abotabad. If someone don't believe just Google it. Hypocrisy of western media 😡

  4. Terrorism as defined by US and Europe is the result of exploitation of other peoples through colonialism, suppression, racial discrimination and violation of human rights. It can only stop with the downfall of western powers, of which will eventually happen. There will then be another type of terrorism. Such is the cycle of life until the human species destroys itself.

  5. Terrorism is everywhere now. It has spread ten-folds. The jiha dists have spread out everywhere, in every society. This happened because USA and the West collaborated with the greatest terrorist country on the earth to contain the Afghans. The invaded the wrong country. The real terroist hub played them fool.😢

  6. Pak Army is under the control of USA AND UK . Did you guys ever saw Army chief who goes Against the interest of Israel every situation are under the control of USA 🇺🇸. We are SLAVES . All terrorist are under the control of pak Army they are using them for their missions. 9 may😢

  7. A recent great video opinion titled: Iraq War Veterans 20 years later.

They interviewed men who went there as boys. They had their original videos where they were hyped up to go "kill some terrorists" but soon realized they really had no mission. They were just there to occupy for an undetermined amount of time and to harass the people with night raids which often targeted the wrong people causing nightmares for Iraqi families as their men were dragged away into the night. One of the comments on the video stated: "more Americans died of suicide then of combat after the Iraq war". That hits hard. I wish those men and women did not take their own lives but instead turned that moral injury into a fervent mission to end future war crimes. I wish they took those evil memories of what they committed and turned that negative energy into something positive like educating fellow Westerners that these wars are for the Epstein class and are mostly for the profit of a few families.

The Iron Grip: How Pakistan's Army Controls Politics, Media, and Courts

The Pakistan Army runs Pakistan like a garrison state. Behind the flag and slogans of patriotism is a system built on fear, control, and violence against its own people.

    Politics Under the Boot
Civilian governments rule only when generals permit it. When Prime Minister Imran Khan challenged military dominance, the response was swift. Under General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the establishment engineered his ouster through a no-confidence vote. Under current Army Chief General Asim Munir, Khan was jailed on dozens of charges, his party PTI was dismantled, and his supporters were hunted. Elections are managed, not won. The message is simple: cross the army and lose everything.

    Manufacturing Terror in Tribal Areas
The military's most brutal control tool is terrorism itself. In tribal areas, the army has long backed militant groups to keep the population terrified and compliant. When activists, nationalists, or locals raise their voice against exploitation, they are killed. The blame goes to the Taliban or unnamed terrorists. Then the army launches televised operations in Waziristan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Bodies are shown, villages are bombed, and press briefings follow. The goal is twofold: crush local dissent and show Western capitals that Pakistan is fighting terror, all to secure dollars and diplomatic cover. The same military that creates the fire sells itself as the only firefighter.

    Silencing Dissent With Force
Beyond the tribal belt, the pattern repeats. Journalists, students, and Baloch, Pashtun, and Sindhi activists who question military rule are abducted by plainclothes men. Some return broken and silent. Thousands remain missing. Extrajudicial killings are policy, not mistakes.

Media and Courts on a Leash
Television channels know what not to air. Editors get calls dictating coverage. Reporters who refuse are beaten, jailed, or shot. Channels are taken off air for telling the truth about Bajwa, Asim Munir, or Imran Khan's treatment. Judges who push back face references and transfers. The law serves the uniform.

    Running on Western Orders
The army keeps Pakistan afloat on Western aid and IMF loans. To keep that money flowing, it stages operations, makes arrests, and sells the narrative of a state under siege. But the siege is internal. While generals pose as saviors abroad, they act as occupiers at home.

This is not national security. It is a protection racket run by men in uniform. And until it ends, Pakistan will remain a country controlled by fear, not by its people.😢

  9. The Israeli occupation of the West Bank, and US and Israeli terror bombing, and assassinations all over the Middle-East. And in the US south America.
Add aid from Nations such as Germany, and the UK in Palestine.
This unfortunately makes Germans and UK population targets of extremism. Add Far Right violence, and Russian special operations/asynchronous warfare.
