Fact Check: Evaluating Trump’s Claims Linking High US Diesel Prices to Ukraine

Date:

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has linked elevated domestic diesel prices to the war in Ukraine and related foreign policy decisions. While Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and subsequent Western sanctions on Russian petroleum products created significant disruptions in global fuel markets, energy analysts point to a broader set of economic drivers. Elevated diesel prices have also been heavily influenced by reduced domestic refining capacity following pandemic-era closures, surging post-lockdown demand, and supply restrictions implemented by OPEC+ oil producers.

  • Donald Trump attributed record-high U.S. diesel fuel costs directly to the conflict involving Ukraine and federal international policies.
  • Global diesel supplies tightened significantly after Western nations imposed sanctions and embargos on Russian refined petroleum following the 2022 invasion.
  • European nations shifted toward importing diesel from the United States and other regions, increasing competition and raising global wholesale prices.
  • U.S. refining capacity experienced substantial declines between 2020 and 2022 due to permanent facility closures, maintenance delays, and transitions to renewable fuels.
  • Energy economists conclude that while the geopolitical crisis in Ukraine impacted supply, structural refining shortages and crude oil production limits were equally critical factors.

  1. Trump always blames his screwups on others. It's a superpower he has. For it to be Ukraine's fault, we (the United States) would have to be buying the bulk of our oil from Russia. Also according to Trump, we don't get our oil from Russia OR Iran.

  2. It took the expert over 11 minutes to clearly state that Ukraine's bombardment of Russian refineries has nearly no impact on global diesel prices. With allies like Trump/the USA, who needs enemies??!!

  3. So the real reason diesel is so expensive in the USA is because those greedy oil execs are exporting double the diesel to foreign markets at record prices and making American consumers price compete with foreign buyers. Trump is just lying to cover his billionaire friends so they can keep screwing the American consumer to boost their profits.
