Thousands of swimmers from around the globe participated in the annual Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race in Istanbul, taking on the 6.5 km challenge from Asia to Europe. The event, which temporarily shuts down one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, the Bosphorus Strait, to accommodate the swimmers, saw participants from over 70 countries. Both professional and amateur swimmers navigated strong currents to reach the European side, making it a unique and exhilarating experience for everyone involved. The race, which began in 1989, emphasizes not only the physical challenge but also the cultural and communal aspect of bringing people together across continents.
More than 2,800 swimmers participated in the race, swimming from Istanbul’s Asian side to its European side.
The Bosphorus Strait was closed to shipping traffic for a few hours to ensure the safety of the swimmers.
The race covers a distance of 6.5 km and features powerful currents that swimmers must navigate to avoid being swept off course.
Participants included both professional swimmers and brave amateurs who trained extensively for the event.
The event attracted participants from over 70 different countries, highlighting its popularity and international appeal.
Atakan Ajan from Turkey was the fastest male swimmer, completing the race in 45 minutes and 27 seconds, while Talia Alan was the fastest woman, finishing in just under 47 minutes.
The race is not only about the competition but also about sharing a unique experience and coming together in the famous waters between two continents.
