German Left Party Divided Over Stance on Anti-Zionism

Date:

Germany’s Left Party, Die Linke, is facing significant internal divisions regarding its stance on the conflict in the Middle East and the definition of anti-Zionism. During a recent party congress in Augsburg, delegates debated a motion aimed at distancing the organization from anti-Zionist rhetoric, which some leadership members argue can serve as a cover for antisemitism. These disagreements highlight a growing rift between the party’s traditional stances and a younger generation of activists pushing for stronger criticism of Israel, all while the party struggles to stabilize its polling numbers following a high-profile split.

  • The Left Party held a federal congress in Augsburg to establish a new political direction following the departure of Sahra Wagenknecht and her supporters.
  • A central point of conflict emerged over a motion to explicitly reject anti-Zionism, leading to heated debates among delegates.
  • Proponents of the motion argued that the party must clearly oppose antisemitism and recognize Israel’s right to exist as part of Germany’s historical responsibility.
  • Opponents expressed concern that the motion would stifle legitimate criticism of the Israeli government and limit solidarity with Palestinian civilians.
  • The internal friction comes as Die Linke continues to poll below the five-percent threshold required to secure seats in the German parliament.

  1. Germany's supportive attitude of the genocidal psychopath regime of Netanyahu and the ones who shared his views before that is a total disgrace and it will stay in the history books as another one of the disastrous ideological decisions this country took! The world will remember how you sanctioned journalists who covered the genocide, how you shielded corrupt pedo politicians , how you exported arms to the oppressors and how you were breaking the noses of women protesting the genocide in central Berlin! You continue with the ludicrous defence of obviously evil fascist criminals! SHAME! SHAME ON YOU! I will never vote and support again a left party that doesn't have a clear plan to oppose the bs coming from the apartheid genocide comitters!

  2. zionism is a far-right fascist ideology, the majority of zionists are evangelical christians, it is antisemitic itself, the only use it has for jews is as a cloak and shield, any criticism of zionism is decried as antisemitism.

  3. in the US, its so significant that anyone who speaks on this issue will get the public support irrespective of the political affiliation.
I know of hardcore MAGA superfans, supporting Kamala as of now after the Iran stance by Trump, yes!

  4. Basically you are saying people should treat this group of people as privileged, special and untouchable, where they are immune to criticism and do whatever they want with impunity. OK then, you argue it's because of the Holocaust, well it's not just Jews that's the victims of WWII, there are many other group people being systematically killed or in camps during the Nazi times or Imperial Japanese invasion, why are a certain group of people more special than others.

  5. Germany is genuinely insane in its rabif pro zionism. Even German anti zionist jews are brutally assaulted by German police and prosecuted under unjust laws. Antizionism is not antisemitism, the German state shouldn't be policing the speech of its citizens at the behest of a foreign country

  6. Oh my word, let me just start by saying this: the way you titled this video hit me so hard I had to pause, blink twice, and whisper to myself “Luise… steady… this creator is about to unpack political tension with the same intensity you use when trying to negotiate with your own inbox.” And goodness, the moment you mentioned the German Left Party being split over anti‑Zionism, my brain immediately launched into one of those chaotic internal dialogues like “Luise, remember when you tried to explain a simple office disagreement and somehow turned it into a 45‑minute TED Talk about communication styles?” and another voice went “Girl, if you can’t even mediate who gets the last muffin at work, maybe don’t attempt geopolitics.” Honestly, watching this felt like sitting in on a family meeting where everyone brought their own dictionary, their own historical timeline, and their own emotional support water bottle. I once tried to mediate a debate between two friends about whether pineapple belongs on pizza, and let me tell you, the energy was eerily similar: raised eyebrows, passionate monologues, and me in the middle whispering “Whew… how did I get here?” But truly, thank you for creating something so clear, so grounded, and so unexpectedly relatable that I found myself thinking about how communication collapses not because people disagree, but because everyone thinks they’re the only one holding the correct map. If productivity had a political wing, it would probably split too, and I’d be the one in the corner taking notes like “Okay… so this is why my group projects keep falling apart.”

  7. 'Actually existing zionism' might confuse the Professor but it sounds pretty precise to me – it refers to the ideology of the Israeli regime as it is in reality, just as 'actually existing socialism' referred to the ideology of the DDR. According to the ICJ July 2024 determination and the ICC indictments against Netanyahu and Gallant, the Israeli regime is enforcing an illegal occupation and racial segregation and apartheid in the Palestinian territories, and war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

  8. The fact this is even contentious within the "left" party in Germany shows how egregiously unconditional German support is for Israel and their perpetual genocide and apartheid. Absolutely abysmal.

  9. no matter where you go in the world, the political Left has always been divided, which is why we tend to lose, because the rightwing is united and not squabbling over petty politics or tainted by single-issue voters

  10. If Germany really wants to take responsibility to the holocaust, they should carve out piece of Germany land and move Israel there. They should not be on Palestine land.

  11. Zionism doesn’t mean you have to support everything Israel does or like Netanyahu and his government. Plenty of Israelis don’t. Zionism also doesn’t mean you can’t support Palestinians having an independent state. But if your position is that Jews should be denied self-determination in their indigenous homeland (ie Eretz Israel), that their state should be wiped off the map or that they’re all “white Europeans,”* then you’re an antisemite, whether deliberately or because you have uncritically assimilated the decades of Arab and Soviet Russian Jew-hatred that lies at the heart of the entire “anti-Zionist” movement.

I don’t like Israel’s conduct in wars either, but I understand fully that it’s a direct response to Israel being attacked by groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, which themselves operate with the support of Iran and with total disregard for the well-being of the civilians they use as human shields.

    * Fun fact: A majority of Israeli Jews are actually of Middle Eastern and North African origin and have no connection to Europe and don’t meet any definition of “white.” Their communities were dispossessed, stripped of citizenship and violently expelled from Arab nations, despite having lived in those places for hundreds or even thousands of years and in many cases predating the presence of Islam or Arabic.

  12. The Green Party in England and Wales tried to have a vote called "Zionism is racism" however the vote was filibustered, because it was clear the vote would win. So in 6 months time at the next conference, expect the Green Party in England and Wales to declare Zionism to be racism.

In Germany racism is illegal so if Zionism was declared racism in Germany then that would be interesting.

  13. At 5:25 in this video, the woman being interview said the Germany was the country which committed the genocide, there has been more than one genocide.

I'm British, and Britain committed many genocides all around the world. Britain invented concentration camps in the Boer war 1899-1902, and the last British concentration camps were in Kenya 1951-1960. The biggest genocides Britain has committed have been in India, North America, Australia, all across Africa.

Britain is not alone, Spain, the Netherlands, France, all sorts of countries have committed genocides around the world.

When you look at Germany the World War Two genocide wasn't the first there was also Namibia from 1904-1908.
