Former President Donald Trump has sparked significant international concern following statements regarding the United States’ role within NATO. During a recent campaign event, Trump suggested that the U.S. might not defend alliance members who fail to meet agreed-upon defense spending targets. These comments, which included a suggestion of encouraging Russian actions against non-compliant members, have led to a swift backlash from NATO leadership and European officials. Critics argue such rhetoric undermines the principle of collective security that has anchored transatlantic relations for decades.
- Former President Donald Trump stated he would not protect NATO allies that fall short of their financial obligations to the alliance.
- The remarks included an anecdote where Trump claimed he would encourage Russia to act against nations deemed “delinquent” in their defense spending.
- NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned that suggestions that allies will not defend each other put both European and American soldiers at risk.
- European leaders emphasized that the 2% GDP defense spending target remains a priority, but reaffirmed that the alliance’s security guarantees are unconditional.
- The White House and other international diplomats described the comments as an affront to the stability of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

What do you think? What do you make of all the conflicting messages around this ceasefire? Do you think it's a deal that's destined to last?
NATO should kick out US 😂
Which NATO wants to involve it with the WH clown, perhaps Hungary! Trump's conflict with Iran is illegal. MAGA-USA please leave NATO asap!
US involvement with NATO has over many years been way too dominant and peaking since the MAGA-Administration. Enough is enough, just leave and withdraw your bases from European soil.
NATO can go on wit 31 countries ……..its not a forced alliance
There is no reason for NATO for participate in the aggression. Is Rutte working for Europe or the Trump? If not for France, NATO would have just be the lap dog of the US. Rutte is acting like the European version of Pete Hegseth. France should demand Rutte be fired. Perhaps France should form a parallel coalition that will be truly working for Europe. It is obvious that US interests have hurt Europe over the decade. Time for Europe to go its own way and send Rutte out the door.
Isn't that the guy who called Trump his daddy? Europe is not to be taken seriously under any circumstances
Mark Rutte 👎🏽👎🏽
Western Europe needs to wake up and stop being a freeloader on the US's expense! Why can't Europe defend itself anymore?
Leave nato, close us bases, trade oil in euro. Sounds like a good future for Europe for the future 🙂
The video you played is different from what Trump responded to. That's being economical with the truth. Ukraine wasn't their war and they contributed billions. Iran is a threat to everybody through sponsoring of terrorism. What the Americans are fighting for in Iran will make the world safer.
As a US tax payer, I don’t see a value of NATO for us. They are a bunch of defenseless paper tigers without US. They just want us to defend their interests so that they can spend on their social welfare programs. If NATO a defensive organization, why should we involved in Ukraine war? Ukraine is not a nato member, not even a EU member. It is not a US war period!!!
Usa should exit nato
I think the argument that nato is a defencive alliance doesn't work in the case of Iran in some aspects because what you are saying is that we have to allow them to get nuclear bombs and when they attack us then we as NATO can to something about it until then we can't to nothing.
Also I think trump was asking for minimal support (mostly defencive support) and NATO members to allow US to use its airspace. I dont think that too much to ask.
how long will mark rutte be tops at nato? i would love to see him fishing in some polluted usa river for the rest of his life. has he not learned that cheesing it up with a wanna be dictator brings nothing? the man had great credentials to start, but turned out to be the worst butt kisser possible at the worst time possible. give him a seat in the trump peace board…
Europe must STOP war in Ukraine and find PEACE with Russia asap. Then EU will have sufficient resources to improve the quality of life and stature.
Nato countries didn’t back the USA 🇺🇸 on Iran because they hate Donald Trump … not because is a defensive alliance, is proven in the past when iraq and libia where destroyed… with the surprising help of Denmark
All we asked was to use our own bases and fly over using the airspace of our great friends. That access was denied. Faux friends.
Kick the war criminals out of NATO. We don't need USA! EU leaders should stop be afraid little girls
What is sellout Rutte even saying? I think Europe should leave NATO together with Canada and let these 2 lover boys Rutte and Rump go together to Iran as they so wish
This reason Russia does mess with is because of USA not beacuse the other allies frow up Europe quit crying
USA leave NATO
Trump is the only problem who wants to devide NATO let him leave office every thing will return to normal
All of the Europeans and Canada loved the US as long as they could take advantage of us on trade and let us pay their defense bills. When the gravy train stopped our so-called friends turned on us.
Trump does not understand what NATO was or is. He thought, apparently, that if he and Israel started a war with Iran, then NATO countries had an obligation to defend the US. Perhaps someone should have read to him the NATO rules. In the past, trump has talked about NATO in terms of the US paying for everything and all of the other countries just profiting from the US's money. I am pretty sure he understood that all the countries involved had to pay the same amount because he probably doesn't understand what "percent of GDP" actually is, nor does he care to know. He also doesn't understand that if all of the countries of the world demanded the removal of US military bases from their territories, it would put the US in quite a pickle. The US has much more to lose by not having a presence all over the world, than anything those countries would lose by the removal of those bases. Think about what has happened in the Middle East this past month. All of the countries that had US military bases became targets wherever those bases were. If I remember well, those US bases are wherever they are as a protection by the US for those countries. This past month has proven that as a protection, a US base is useless and operates more as a bull's eye, putting all of the populations in those countries in danger. And all of that because the president of the US has no understanding of geopolitics, politics or economy.
Trump believes that if the US leaves NATO, all the money spent on NATO will be saved (and he likely will get his cut). He likely believes that if all of the US military bases were removed from everywhere in the world, the same would apply (and he would make a fortune). I remember during trump.01, when he wanted to remove the US bases from South Korea which threw the US military into a panic because it would mean that their warning of incoming would be reduced to seconds instead of minutes.
I don't understand why people keep talking about trump as if he was a "regular" president. He is a criminal of very, very low mental capacity and no knowledge or understanding of what a president's duties and obligations are. It would be no different if a person fresh from having failed high school was suddenly made president and everyone around him kept telling him he was great, a genius, the best ever president. The high school drop out, would likely do better than trump because being young, he just might have some inkling that he is in over his head and needs help from people who know what's going on in the world. He might even just spend his days playing computer games, throwing parties and hanging out with friends. Imagine how much better the US (and the world) would be doing if that was the US president. The biggest scandal would likely be the president being said to be consuming large quantities of pot or getting drunk at his parties.
In 1956, Britain lost its 'Superpower' status at the Suez Canal.
In 2026, is the USA facing its 'Suez Moment' in the Strait of Hormuz?
NATO has worked for 70 years, and the only time it was called into operation was after 9/11, when countries supported America (only to be insulted by Trump 10 years later, but hey ho, it’s Trump). In fact, the one time it didn’t—during the Falklands War—America did not back Britain not in the way of suppling ships , even though its territory was attacked by Argentina.
But I digress. It’s worked for 70 years; it will not disappear overnight. America is a member, and while things have gone a bit nuts at the moment, the country is having a nervous breakdown—a big one—but it will pass. America will be taken off to the asylum in November when it can’t do any more damage, and in a few years, it will be better and be like it was.
NATO is not at breaking point.. I think Any NATO country would help/support america with getting Trump out of office
USA needs Nato more than Europe needs Nato, USA is the one going around the world causing problems and expecting Nato's backing.
Can americans not see their president is mentally unstable and that it's time to shift focus from the world and MAGA?
The law that was passed that would restrict a us president from pulling out of nato is highly controversial considering the us constitution clearly states the United States president has the power over such decisions so if taken to the Supreme Court it is highly likely that law would get struck down. Please expand your research before just sheepishly echoing other journalists opinions
can we just regain a bit of perspective here?
– trump is a lame duck president with record low poling within his country.
– US is just one country in a 30+ member alliance ( yes, it brings much to the table, but can and will, ultimately, be replaced )
Americans generally support NATO. The Trump administration is a bizarre failing aberration. New, hopefully more intelligent leadership will emerge in a couple of years. Weather the storm.
If those countries have such a problem with us reps expressing themselves because they are not pulling their weight then ask the us to leave the alliance and that’s it.
I think NATO will ultimately survive Trump, but trust in the US will take a long time to rebuild. Even if Trump ends up replaced by a Democrat, Europe and others will still be wary over another Trump-like figure getting elected.
Trumps anger is possible the best sign of You doing the right thing.
UK is redirecting Interceptor Missiles away from Ukraine to Qatar?
Please remove Trump from presidency, and all problems go away, without any further deaths…
EU should break away from US. We must create NATO with EU, UK and Canada only. An organization cannot work with an unstable bully, threatening the partners (Greenland), with periodic tantrums. And we should only buy EU military equipment developing our industry and not financing US industry. We must stand by ourselves otherwise we will go down with US.
NATO should not support any NATO state that is attacking an other state. NATO is a defence organisation.
