A landmark legal ruling has determined that harmful social media content contributed to the death of a teenager, marking a significant precedent for platform accountability. The inquest concluded that algorithms used by major tech companies delivered material that romanticized self-harm, negatively impacting the mental health of a minor. This verdict is the first of its kind to formally link social media consumption to a specific fatality in a legal setting. It has intensified global discussions surrounding the necessity of stricter regulations and greater transparency from digital service providers.

  • A coroner ruled that social media content “contributed more than minimally” to the death of 14-year-old Molly Russell.
  • The ruling identified that the teenager was exposed to thousands of pieces of harmful images and videos on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest.
  • Representatives from Meta and Pinterest testified during the proceedings, acknowledging that the user had viewed content that violated their safety policies.
  • The verdict highlights the role of automated recommendation algorithms in amplifying potentially dangerous material to vulnerable younger users.
  • The case is expected to influence the enforcement of the Online Safety Act and could lead to increased legal liability for technology firms worldwide.

  1. Meghan Markle has limited,,historic, involvement with the NFL, primarily participating in the 2014 DirecTV Celebrity Beach Bowl before joining the royal family. While she and Prince Harry have generally avoided attending the Super Bowl to evade negative press, she remains active in athletic, charity-focused events.

Hence, William Markle status to like that.

  3. In 5 10 15 30 years , no kid will use a pencil or pen. No kid will read. All jobs automated . No jobs for graduates . No newspapers . Nothing except your phone. No paper trail

  4. Social media was the beginning of the end for us.

  5. When you are blaming everything but yourself :

  6. This is ridiculous. Yeah I don't like Social media giants but this will be used as a gateway to force adults to ID verify. We will all lose our rights to digital privacy. (The irony here was Meta was also lobbying for ID verification).

I think what this implicates is that parents aren't doing their job.

I grew up when YouTube and Facebook was blowing up too, but my parents refused to give me a phone and watched me like a hawk so I didn't turn out like that. Yes I was angry at my parents, but I turned out a fine successful young man and I have them to thank for. πŸ™

If you can't parent your kids. Don't have them, otherwise you'll fark us all over.

  7. wow punishing social media companies for the lack of parenting. remember that youtube should also come under this category for it's 'tiktok' shorts, notifications pop ups, echo chambered channels and endless arguing over politics. I'll include reddit too

  8. So not the fault of the parents then…

  9. He's made more than the publicized punishment since then. Let's be real this is like saying naughty man you get a splinter as punishment. You should see the fraud advertised on social media. If a normal person holds up a sign saying drugs for sale they go jail. If people advertise drugs on social media they don't remove it. They need to hire lots of English speaking people to fix their system or not be corrupt. Tough in this world to be legit

  10. Know the man by the company he keeps!πŸ€‘πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

  11. i think you people need to comes to terms with reality… almost all chronic physiological conditions arise from a disorder known as intestinal permeability or leaky gut… the gut brain axis can send gram negative neurotoxins directly to the brain… the human microbiome is the foundations of our health… the human being has more bacterial DNA working upon it than it has it's own human DNA… the mitochondria… the powerplants of our cells and our bodies were once an ancient form of bacteria that developed a symbiotic relationship with a eukaryotic cell…. there are many people today who believe humans are simply some form of bacterium that are having a human experience.

  12. All this pearl clutching and hysteria over saving the poor little children. This by the same morons that gave their kids unconstrained access to smartphones in the first place. Yet unlike tobacco and alcohol, there is zero clinical evidence that social media causes addiction. Christ on a bike, what is it about these snowflake sheeple that they need to invent threats to piss their pants about, like chem-trails, falling off a flat-Earth or this bullshit. Get a a grip!!

  13. Google should be next they are far more corrupt.

  14. Not just agent 99 and Maxwell controlling kaos

  15. Despite warnings that deep ties with Red China (Communist China) are dangerous, no one listened. Everything has been turned into something Chinese.
China has always had only one goal β€” as stated by the late Red leader Mao Zedong (Shi Bo Mo): β€œWe do not need to invade the world. We just need to make the world unable to survive without Chinese people.” This thinking exists in the minds of all Chinese people.
The Communist Chinese have one clear objective: to weaken, undermine, and dismantle free and democratic nations β€” this has always been their primary goal.

  16. Nobody force them by gun to use social media, it's freedom of choice in democracy πŸ™‚

  17. There are those of us who have been using Social Media (since the mid-1990's) longer than that gal has been alive and we have been mentally ill for her whole life. Where is our payout??

  18. Just because mental health was already compromised, doesn't mean that companies have the right to exacerbate whatever the problem is, and then stack more issues on top that they didn't need/want/know they had. A doctor making things worse is just as horrible as social media making peoples mental health worse.

  19. Auto scroll etc should be an opt in/out thing, even for adults. As well as ads. If you (even adults) don't want to see political, medication, cosmetics etc ads, then you should be allowed to opt out. If you opt out of all the adult stuff, then you get the same ads as kids. That would be fine with me. Ads about stickers and glitter are easier on my mental health than being bombarded by political, beauty shaming and big pharma BS. Youtube already has the on/off for auto-play. I got off social media years ago because I am still unable to handle any of that sh1t any more (depression/anxiety since childhood) and social media did not exist when I was a child. I would barely consider YouTube Social Media except for the comment section, and that can be turned off by streamers.

  20. blaming technology for human behavior. dont let your child use phone or computers until adulthood. its all bout the money

  21. You should concentrate on the drug and Alcohol addiction in your own country the UK before you go off looking for excuses to control the narrative BBC…And all Social media has to do is restrict access time ..

  22. They have to make learning platforms more addictive, perhaps children will addicted to educational content might grow up to be great engineers… πŸ™‚

  23. Rewarding people who take no responsibility for their own failures is surely a recipe for progress.

  24. honestly, most of us born after 2000 could go to court for this. It's not the parents fault!! My parents actually really cared for my wellbeing and only gave me access to a smartphone after my 12th birthday and even after that they tried to keep me away from these platforms. Still, by the time I was 15 I was scrolling TikTok for hours every day and my mental health was seriously impacted by it. You cannot expect parents to watch their teenagers 24/7.
