I just watched a video of an oil tanker arriving in Cuba from Russia. The USA always uses Hispanic countries as its backyard, committing one misdeed after another, invading Venezuela to steal their oil, starting wars for decades… and look at that, the one the BBC always portrays as the bad guy called Putin, doesn't hesitate to do humanitarian work in Cuba by sending a tank of oil.

I would like to make a correction. This invasion of Ukraine by Russia comes from the fact that the US and Western countries did not respect their promisses never to move their military east to the borders of Russia. As we all know their was an agreement between Western leaders including Georges Bush Sr, Helmut Kohl, Francois Mitterrand and Margareth Thatcher, and Michael Gorbachev and Edward Shevardnadze of Russia in 1990 to keep Ukraine neutral in exchange for the reunification of Germany, a very big concession on the part of Russia. The US did not keep its agreement and push for Ukraine to become part of NATO starting in 2008 allowing its military to move eastward toward Russia border, becoming an existential threat to Russia security. Russia reiterated its prior agreement but the US refused and wanted to push its military to borders of Russia in Ukraine. That is why Russia invaded Ukraine. I would have done the same.

Ancient predator species discovered in South Africa challenges what we know about gorgonopsians

In a study published in The Anatomical Record, researchers have identified a new species of large-bodied gorgonopsian from the middle Permian. The discovery pushed back the known origins of when these apex predators began evolving large bodies and their unique later skull morphologies.

The gorgonopsians
"Gorgonopsians were ancient carnivorous animals, early relatives of mammals, that were among the first top hunters on land with sharp teeth," explained Dr. Zanildo Macungo, lead author of the study.
"They lived about 260 million years ago before the Permian–Triassic extinction event in a hot, mostly dry world on the huge landmass called Pangea, filled with open plains, rivers, and strange early plants and animals."
Many gorgonopsian fossils from the Guadalupian and Lopingian are from Russia and South Africa; their phylogenetic relationships remain debated. Among the oldest Russian examples, all specimens appear to be small to medium-sized gorgonopsians, with larger-bodied species evolving much later, indicating that morphological and body-size diversification occurred in gorgonopsians millions of years later.
A similar linear evolution in body size was believed to have occurred in South Africa until the discovery of Phorcys dubei in the Eastern Cape. However, the internal relationships and diversity of gorgonopsians in Africa remain poorly understood.
In order to better understand gorgonopsians' early evolutionary radiation, more early gorgonopsian fossils and a better understanding of the early members of this clade are required.
The new species, Jirahgorgon ceto
The new species name, Jirahgorgon ceto sp. nov., is derived from the surname Jirah, in honor of Dr. Sifelani Jirah, curator of the Karoo collections at the Evolutionary Studies Institute, who made significant contributions to the discovery and preparation of middle Permian Karoo fossils.

Meanwhile, the suffix "gorgon" is in reference to the order Gorgonopsia to which the species belongs. Ceto was chosen as she was the wife of Phorcys and the mother of the gorgons in Greek mythology, after which the gorgonopsians are named.
The fossil was discovered in the Abrahamskraal Formation, part of the Karoo Basin, South Africa. Located on the Wilgerbos farm, part of the Lainsburg District, Western Cape, it was discovered in March 2019 by co-authors Dr. Julien Benoit and Dr. Michael Day.
Radiometric dating of a nearby rock formation indicated that the site formed at the boundary between the Wordian and Capitanian periods, making Jirahgorgon one of the oldest windows into early gorgonopsian evolution.
It was immediately apparent that the fossil was special upon discovery, explained Dr. Macungo. "The discovery of this specimen in a region previously known only for very small gorgonopsians, combined with its distinct morphology, immediately highlighted its significance and suggested a previously unrecognized diversity within the clade. This was subsequently confirmed through detailed anatomical analysis."
The fossil was sent to Grenoble, France, where it was scanned using synchrotron X-ray micro-computed tomography, which allowed the researchers to produce a highly detailed 3D reconstruction of the skull, including its internal microstructure, without damaging it.
The fossil consisted of a skull and jaw and was characterized by its vertical occiput (part of the skull) and rubidgeine-like cranial proportions. Rubidgeines were large gorgonopsians that first appeared in the late Permian, with a characteristic skull morphology typical of large-bodied gorgonopsians.

The presence of these same features in Jirahgorgon in the Wordian overturns notions that carnivores were exclusively small-bodied until larger body sizes evolved millions of years later during the late Permian, Wuchiapingian.
The researchers' analysis also concluded that increases in gorgonopsian body size arose independently, rather randomly, multiple times within the group. Though some structure persisted, body size appears to have been at least partially influenced by shared ancestry.
Additionally, the unique morphology of Jirahgorgon's skull, specifically the arrangement of the pterygoid bones, indicates that Jirahgorgon was already evolving a more powerful, clamping bite compared to smaller relatives, signifying that the species was already evolving ecological specialization aimed at tackling larger prey much earlier than previously believed.
Jirahgorgon, together with another species, Phorcys dubei, now form a new family, Phorcyidae.
Future research includes fieldwork in the same locality in the hope of recovering more fossils, including potentially other Jirahgorgon specimens. Dr. Macungo elaborated, "We will continue our research at the locality to determine whether additional specimens of Jirahgorgon can be recovered."
