Federal regulators are addressing a persistent issue in the trucking industry involving “chameleon” carriers that change their identities to evade safety enforcement. These companies often shut down after receiving poor safety ratings, accumulating significant fines, or being involved in serious accidents, only to reopen shortly thereafter under a new name and Department of Transportation (DOT) number. By shedding their previous records, these fleets bypass federal oversight and continue operations without addressing underlying safety violations. This practice poses a significant challenge for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in its efforts to maintain highway safety and hold habitual offenders accountable.
- Trucking companies are utilizing “chameleon” schemes to discard histories of safety violations and federal penalties.
- The process involves closing a company with a poor safety record and re-registering the same equipment and personnel under a new corporate identity.
- By obtaining new DOT numbers, these carriers effectively reset their safety scores, making it difficult for regulators to track recurring patterns of negligence.
- Safety advocates report that these rebranded companies are frequently involved in severe highway accidents that could have been prevented through stricter enforcement.
- The FMCSA faces logistical hurdles in identifying these entities during the application process, as many use shell addresses and third-party registration services.
- Legislative and technological efforts are being discussed to better link corporate officers and assets across different registrations to close existing loopholes.

American truckers, along with many other hardworking citizens, no longer earn a living wage; instead, they struggle to secure mere survival on a month-to-month basis.
You want your money sell a trailer

The Death Row Records of The Trucking Industry 😂
Fine millions dollars.
The trucking industry has known this has been happening. We are too busy to try to make money.. other than just call the ego drivers out on SM.
I think America was in better shape when the mob ran everything
Capitalists: "just compete harder"
Also capitalists: "we need to fix this…oh wait that's socialism"
I used to work in trucking behind a desk. I could be making a lot of money. I was doing ok for a while. I know people who are very well off from that business. I couldn’t do it after a few years. The shady stuff I saw and had to do wore me down. The exploitation of the drivers. The lying. The stealing. The greed. It was too much for my conscious. I had to get out. I always tell anyone I hear talk about becoming a driver not to do it. It’s not worth it. Good luck folks.
There’s big American truck companies doing the same thing this people are doing.
Bring to the attention of President Trump. He will destroy these foreign companies
I worked for companies like this I always knew they were scamming
The founder of that company should be arrested.
This is the something the logging industry is doing in Oregon and I would guess California and Washington state. We call them fly by night logging companies.
I remember drivers complaining about all this back in the 90s when I was accepting retail deliveries.
Wait a second…. This fella isnt a "reporter". I remember him from the fake Kamala interview. Hes a partisan hack. Why would they choose Florida rather than California? Surely that would be a far beter story..
I'm old. I remember when truckers were courteous, friendly, safe drivers. These days I give them wide berth. I suspect that its just that most drivers are worse, including truckers. Looking at their cell phones, aggressive driving, not letting others merge purposely and for no reason other than maliciousness, etc. One of the central problems is that I might be a victim of dis-courteousness and so I decide to pass it on. Only, I'm not punishing the driver that cut me off, I'm creating a whole new victim. Everyone is really really angry. Driving is a community, cooperative activity. Its not a race, or contest. I can't wait for self-driving vehicles.
Dan Rather@CBS… Kind of true investigative journalism… Thank you 60 minutes.
