Instagram Disables Certain Messaging Features in Europe to Comply with Privacy Regulations

Date:

Meta is disabling several automated safety features on Instagram and Messenger for users in the United Kingdom and Europe to comply with updated privacy regulations. These tools were primarily used to detect grooming behavior and the distribution of illegal content within direct messages. While the change aims to enhance user privacy and adhere to the EU ePrivacy Directive, child safety advocates have voiced significant concerns, arguing that the removal of these monitoring systems will make it more difficult to protect children from online exploitation.

  • Meta is suspending automated message scanning for users in the UK and European Union.
  • The move is a response to strict privacy rules under the EU ePrivacy Directive regarding the monitoring of communications.
  • Suspended features include automated tools previously used to flag child abuse material and suspicious grooming patterns.
  • Child protection organizations warn that the absence of these tools creates a “blind spot” for identifying predators.
  • The decision highlights the ongoing tension between maintaining individual data privacy and ensuring online safety for vulnerable users.

  1. Strangely, I am a racist reform voter, but I am on the side of this lady. I want to restrict access to LGBT content and have oversight on information youth share, and these tools are exactly what we are using in the US right now.

  2. Are we allowed to have privacy in private spaces? Can we not mail things privately? Can we not communicate using MILLIONS of other encrypted tools? Why is that the terrorists and pedophiles (mostly they are government agents doing those crimes) somehow use Facebook and Insta? LOL to the worst humans on Earth: the political class that operates as if they are our masters and the slaves tend to allow them to hold those beliefs.

  3. It's about monetarizing the product. Common… customers are the product. So, be care when is comes to phones, emails, apps, public/private(That's a joke.) cameras… etc. Good luck to all us data points.

  4. Could you own your privacy?
Move your privacy from one company to another company?
For example, wanna use YouTube and make YouTube comments, and that comment is not owned by YouTube, remain anonymous to YouTube, save your comment in another non YouTube privacy company?
