Singapore Coffeeshops Upgrade Toilet Facilities with Government Grants

Date:

Coffee shops across Singapore are increasingly upgrading their restroom facilities through the Toilet Improvement Programme, a government initiative supported by the Housing & Development Board and the National Environment Agency. This scheme provides funding of up to 90% for renovation costs to encourage higher hygiene standards in older eating houses. More than 80 operators have applied for the grant, implementing modern features like sensor-operated taps and improved ventilation. These enhancements aim to provide a more pleasant environment for patrons while maintaining public health standards in high-traffic dining areas.

  • The Toilet Improvement Programme (TIP) offers coffeeshop operators grants covering up to 90% of restroom renovation expenses.
  • Over 80 coffeeshops have applied for the funding to modernize their facilities and improve public hygiene.
  • Renovations prioritize touchless technology, including sensor-activated flushes and taps, to reduce the spread of bacteria.
  • The initiative is a joint effort between the Housing & Development Board (HDB) and the National Environment Agency (NEA).
  • The program is specifically designed to assist older coffee shops in upgrading aging infrastructure to meet contemporary cleanliness standards.

  1. Subsidizing private businesses with taxpayer money inevitably forces higher taxes to fund increased government expenditure.
Proper governance should entail mandating that coffee shops maintain restrooms to government standards in order to obtain an operating license.
"What will make you need to raise GST? Profligate spending and irresponsible, unsustainable plans. That is what will hurt and require you to raise taxes and GST." – PM Lee in GE2015

    And then;

"Irresponsible not to raise GST as spending needs rise sharply: PM Lee Aug 21, 2022

  2. It's my opinion that PAP is only about spending and revenue collection and tax + toilet upgrading Grants, no breakthrough e.g. Swiss standard of living?, world cup football? X-border payment? autonomous vehicle? 0 corruption? nothing even with FTs and CECA.
So I am NOT expecting anything much from these very expensive PAP other than fixing works.

  3. ironic, government have to subsidize what should be requirement to keep license to operate food establishment. These coffee shops are owned by rich taukes still need government subsidy to keep clean/hygienic toilets.

something stinks about the whole thing – and it is not the toilet..

  4. CNA

This is not good enough. We need a self cleaning WC.

    Basically to pee or dump.

Then a CNC or AI self cleaning and drying. This can be easily done with a customised manufacturer and quick installation Contractors.

Come on Singapore, We can do better than this. Just an engineering job.
