China Increases Military and Defense Cooperation with Pakistan

Date:

China has significantly strengthened its military and strategic ties with Pakistan, emerging as the country’s primary supplier of conventional weapons. This deepening defense cooperation includes the acquisition of advanced military hardware, such as fighter jets, naval frigates, and submarines. The growing alliance between Beijing and Islamabad aims to bolster Pakistan’s defense capabilities and maintain a balance of power in South Asia, marking a notable shift away from Pakistan’s historical reliance on Western defense suppliers.

  • China has become Pakistan’s largest source of major arms, accounting for the majority of its military imports in recent years.
  • Key defense acquisitions from China include J-10C fighter aircraft, VT-4 main battle tanks, and Type 054A/P multi-role frigates.
  • The bilateral security relationship includes the joint production of military hardware, such as the JF-17 Thunder fighter jet.
  • A major naval agreement is underway for China to supply Pakistan with eight Hangor-class submarines to modernize its fleet.
  • This defense cooperation serves mutual strategic interests, particularly in countering the regional influence of neighboring India.
  • The shift toward Chinese military procurement highlights a decline in defense acquisitions from traditional Western partners, including the United States.

  1. With due respect, I don't know what Mr. Wezeman is saying. I have personally visited the JF-17 Thunder Factory, and Yes Pakistan does relies on key Aerospace Materials and some Avionics components to be imported from China. Isn't that's what joint program means? I, myself has an Aerospace Engineering background and the so called expert researcher didn't even used exact terms to make his claim.
