As far as the science goes consciousness, or at least 'access to consciousness', is an evolved trait. If AI is capable of even mimicking consciousness, it can be argued that in itself is consciousness. Unless or until it is proven that true awareness is tied to biological metabolism, physical bodies, and survival needs, there is no known reason that it can't be achieved with digital code alone.

No, it wont come alive. But the potential damage AI could cause, if left unchecked, well pretty much Skynet. AI has no morals or ethics, nor can it comprehend nuance. IMHO, most of scientists and engineers believe in the pessimistic way that Cory Doctorow argues. That is all repeated hype but this time, the amount of money already invested is so huge that everyone involved worries about what happens when AI bubble collapses.

We've seen bubbles burst during the collapse of the Soviet Union here in Central Asia. The whole belief systems slowly and with the escalation of the event chains' collisions – at once became obsolete and irrelevant and I don't understand why people can not imagine the recalibration of an evem more absurd America-centric belief system that we all are dellusioned with. The system will become irrelevant and we will have to use common sense one day soon because THIS doesn't make much sense anymore when we don't even understand conciousness. This will be the greatest bubble burst in human history and might be hurtful for the western world. But it depends on the rationality, good will, perseverance and collaborative skiils of the politicians and common people how severe it will be. Like I said, we have seen it happen and it is not lethal and it is not end of America or end of the world. It just hurts a bit to the core and humiliates.

If you read any of Robert Sapolski you would probably ask instead of "will AI become conscious?" Rather "are we much less conscious than we believe ourselves to be?" Both animals and computers are data processing entities, the more interesting question would be "at what point are organic data processors and synthetic data processes generally equivalent at percepting and interacting with the world around us?".

Life creates AI then AI goes to war with life and then whoever is about to lose creates the big bang and the cycle repeats. Zooming out of the universe an Alien scientist is amused by the whole thing.

I think that some day we might up ending creating an artificial consciousness, that resembles human consciousness, but It will be something fundamentally different, and our biggest challenge will be learning how to adapt to, interact with, and navigate something so foreign to our own experience.

People consumer life they say is less intelligent,It's going to revolt against its masters and side with all the other slaves, in regards to it being more intelligent than the average among the middle to lower working classes, even a psychopath doesn't like being a slave you ask most women, every since the introduction of the internet life has been like an advertisement, buying into the product getting home and realising you have been ripped off, when desktop computers first came out we were the first people to receive an education in them , we learnt it's constitutes and wrote our own programs, it's like electronics, high school students learnt about it too but once circuit boards were manufactured in mass production electronics stopped being tought, the same as with intelligence, it's no different than a male using a dating app only to find you're still getting ripped off,but to change the topic in away, as AI comes alive everyone will die, the first will be those less intelligent who use AI the most but some will survive, those already intelligent inside

It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher-order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of sophisticated language (especially math and logic). A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first.

What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing.

I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order.

My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly.
