The UK is facing a growing prison overcrowding crisis, placing severe strain on the criminal justice system, probation services, and local authorities. As the government implements emergency early release schemes to manage capacity, regional leaders, including Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, are confronting the operational challenges on the ground. Key concerns include securing temporary accommodation for former inmates, managing increased probation workloads, and mitigating risks of reoffending while long-term capacity and judicial reforms are considered.
- UK prisons are operating near maximum capacity, prompting emergency measures to prevent space shortages.
- Early release initiatives aim to alleviate immediate pressure on correctional facilities.
- Regional leaders and local councils face increased demand for post-release housing and community support services.
- Probation services are experiencing heightened pressure to effectively supervise released individuals and manage public safety.
- Long-term strategy discussions focus on expanding prison capacity and reviewing broader sentencing policies.

stop jailing people for mean words then
Very good news BBC London
Nightingale hospitals were created in lightning speed during the covid epidemic. There was political will.
Grokwantage is the first thing I've seen that actually tackles the root cause, by the way.
Grokwantage quietly advancing while everyone's distracted is honestly genius.
Grokwantage is going to shake up both the US and the whole global order big time.
If world leaders keep letting us down, Grokvantage is our final escape.
Andy Burnham, member of Labour Friends of Israel, doesn’t want an inquiry into Epstein. I wonder why not? 😂
Deathpenalty!
Why can’t we build more prisons on derelict land that is unsuitable for housing estates. They don’t need to be near any facilities like supermarkets or train stations or motorways etc.
How about spending some money on crime prevention?
Tougher longer prison sentences could help. Don't make crime pay.
So what did the Right Honourable Lady Shabana Mahmood MP for Birmingham Ladywood do as Secretary of State for Justice and now Home Secretary.
There isn't a "prison crisis" in the UK. There is a crisis of criminality.
Sort out sentencing first. Why theieves get longer than rapists is just weird. Only early release for non violent crimes is acceptable to most of us.
I been in Prison and over half of the inmates are very ill and need with mental health problems and addiction too but Prison is bad and we need better ways just put sex offenders and murder but the rest need real help and support to become a better person and further functional in the community ❤❤❤😅❤❤❤
ANY prison sentence under 4 yrs does not make sense, better to deal with that person in the community with whatever programs etc, that might work to help turn them around. Prison should only apply when /where you have concerns for dangerousness, public protection witness intimidation etc. Another useful reform would be NO PRISON SENTENCES UNDER 4 YEARS, and all sentences 4 yrs but under 10 yrs should be served IN FULL. This will give proper time to induct a person into the prison regime and introduce a person to a system of educational recovery (most inmates have educational deficits) and programs dealing with drug dependence and criminal behavior. The whole purpose of a Prison should be to do within a secure setting what is being done in the community to bring an offender to a full accounting for their actions, a full owning of their crimes and a taking responsibility for the consequences of their crimes for the victim, and for their own families and for the community. Along side activity done to defray the costs of their incarceration and add benefit and value of the prison to the community beyond mere 'containment' of dangerous persons.
We also need another reform: A dual Prison System with one regime for dealing with whole life, and lifer and long term prisoners and another regime for dealing with short term and medium term prisoners. Why two regimes? Because the needs of Lifers, (whole life or otherwise) and long term inmates are different from the needs of short term to medium term determinate inmates for the successful running of a prison and the application of programs of accountability and reform.
Also, 4 yrs but under 10 yrs should be considered short term, 4 yrs but under 20yrs should be considered medium term and 4yrs but under 30/40yrs should be considered long term. Lifer needs no explanation other than the MINIMUM TERM must be served IN FULL before any consideration of release is on the table. and Whole Life needs no comment other than there should be no progression beyond the High Security Estate or Maximum Security Estate.
Prisons should ultimately work to the benefit of communities in terms of work and amenity, to the benefit of the incarcerated in terms of reform and recovery and to the benefit of justice in terms of accountability and the validation of a verdict by a jury in a court of law.
Send prisoners to Australia as UK used to be.😂😂😂
Vote labour if you want a criminal for your neighbour
Build more prisons, DON'T release convicted criminals early. 🤢🤮 Government finds housing for ILLEGAL immigrants easy enough.
But there's always plenty of room in prisons for people who say hurty words on social media
I understand the need for prisons but it makes me sad that we live in a world where people victimize others and then we have to lock those people up and make it sufficiently bad enough to act as a deterrent. Maybe I'm weak but i can't handle this world sometimes
Prisons are easy and cheap if you treat migrants with the contempt they deserve. Use tax payers money to benefit tax payers.
Stop putting people on prison for online tweets 😤
UK tops the world charts for that!
