1. russia's invasion of Ukraine did not begin 5 years ago, but in 2014.
2. russians want a ceasefire because they've started to feel its impact on themselves, not because they feel sorry for the killed Ukrainians or destroyed Ukrainian cities.
3. It's very convenient to shift all responsibility away from Russians and onto Putin, but let's not turn a blind eye to who elected him and who continues to obey and praise him.
4. Why should anyone care about russian political prisoners in russia, if even the russians themselves don't care about them?

Putin is a dilemma now. Anyone who speaks the truth are being declared an Enemy of Russia.

Like the Americans, just because they have huge military capacity, does not make up for the fact that they have poor soldiers, poor leadership and poor strategies. The Russians have never won a serious war on their own, just like their US counterparts, continually proving the old adage, the bigger they come, the harder they fall.

When has Russia ever been a free, non-coercive upon its own people, country? When? From Ivan IV Vasilyevich right through to Vlad Putin, and the country's inexorable descent back to totalitarianism. Vlad Putin's Russia is well past bogstandard authoritarianism, say, the kind you see in Erdogan's Turkey. The Russians, from Ivan the Terrible's rule, the Tsars, then the communists, to Vlad's rule now, always, but always, have someone cracking the whip over their heads. That is this country's only modus operandi: whip cracked over the heads of the bulk of the population. There was a very short spell under Gorbachev with his perestroika and glasnost, when the country showed, once in its entire history, to be on a trajectory of freedom, civil society, openness. But it all came to nothing. Russia is a country where coercion and cruelty are the normal way the country (dis)functions. I feel sorry, first , for the countries which have the awful luck to share borders with Russia, and then I feel sorry for the Russians who haven't known anything different from the time Ivan IV Vasilyevich. Whip cracked over their heads for centuries on end.

Steve Rosenberg, agree or not, is British treasure and an amazing journalist. His diplomatic approach to Russia is why he has been allowed to live and operate in Russia for 2 decades. He is an example of 'soft power' – for those interested in realpolitik.
