60 Minutes Australia Reports on Teenager Swapping Smartphone for Flip Phone

Date:

A growing number of teenagers are choosing to abandon their smartphones in favor of basic flip phones to combat screen addiction and reduce the pressures associated with social media. By switching to devices limited primarily to calling and text messaging, youths report significant improvements in their mental well-being, sleep quality, academic concentration, and face-to-face social interactions. This emerging trend highlights a deliberate pushback by adolescents against constant connectivity, algorithmic feeds, and the cognitive toll of modern mobile devices.

  • Adolescents are replacing modern smartphones with basic flip phones to curb excessive screen time and digital dependency.
  • The transition is aimed at minimizing mental health challenges, including anxiety and low self-esteem tied to constant social media consumption.
  • Users report noticeable lifestyle improvements, such as enhanced academic focus, better sleep habits, and more meaningful in-person relationships.
  • The trend reflects a broader youth-led movement seeking greater autonomy over personal time and attention in an increasingly connected world.

  1. I have both now – flip for actual phone to take away that panic "I need my phone" tho I still find my wifi smart phone calls me to it anyways. A lot of flip phones have GPS still tho but it removes all the other metrics apps use to quantify, predict and nudge behavior like scroll time, accelerometer and so on. Social media etc is probably here to stay but it doesn't need to keep invading our attention.

  2. Wowwww Wowwww soooo adorable if I could go without any cell phones I would, I really really hate these cellphone it's messing all these kids now adays, well done young lady ❤❤❤❤❤

  3. 21:35 She hasn't been around very many people older than like 38 ish I'd say because I'm 40 and most the people i know and hang out with pretty much know their way around our own town. Of course if we're somewhere new we'd use maps but we don't have to get into maps everytime we go anywhere lol

  4. My name is Anne I'm 62 . You have such wisdom. I admire you. I wish all young people thought the same way. Kids and teens have lost the ability to interact. There is no social interaction anymore. Kids don't get together and build Cubby houses etc. we had the best childhood. I hope you make a difference. Proud of you

  5. COVID was awesome and NOT everyone was inside watching TV and doing nothing else. I spent more time at the park exercising, enjoying nature and people watching than I ever have. I don't really think the technology is all to blame here though I AM a skeptic too; I just tend to think it's more of a suction device/enhancer for people who are already anxious and depressed.

  6. what a great story and a very intelligent young women> I'm 65 and actually grew up with out a phone. I have a good size chrome computer to watch movies and my shows on and music so yes I use utube but that is about it. I use my phone only for calls and texts plus Google search but really on it that much. I don't even have cable tv I use xfinity hot spots for 10 dollars a month and 20 dollars a month for a track phone card. I will admit though that when my chrome goes out do to what ever reason I hate the silence so I guess that's just as bad??? I do how ever my grandchildren would be off their phones more then they are. Good for you girl I think it's a great idea!!!

  7. I use a computer for work, some artwork, and not a phone so much. Apps on a phone are so frustrating and don't always work well. It's a brain and time suck monster anyway. Lol! Stupid AI keeps trying to creep in as well. — I still call people out of the blue to chat. It's nice to hear your friends' voices now and then. 😊 And yes, we still love to use a Rand-McNally atlas when on roadtrips, otherwise, we would not have seen a lot of cool places we would have missed. GPS keeps you on freeways and not on the beautiful alternate routes.
