Democratically unelected Burnham is hopelessly out of his depth. There's a huge criminal element arriving illegally which he's not got a grip of, with limited prison places. A fundamental flaw in this masterplan is to release criminals back into society where the over burdened and under funded police have already indicated they can't cope with the civil unrest in high crime areas. The police can't recruit enough new officers and resignation rates are through the roof. How bad does it have to get?

It's good when politicians are able to within the law, make sure extreme injustices dont occur, this is good news from the pm. This is refreshing to see an interview where the questions are answered honestly, even if people don't like the answers. There are no easy answers to this problem, in the short term, Burnham's approach is the best thing he could do given the circumstances. And in the long term, building more prisons and recruiting more prison staff will be the best way to solve this problem. I just wish that the British public would be more reasonable when a government proposes a policy that responds to a problem with the understanding that we are where we are and that there is no magic wand or silver bullet that solves a problem instantly and that it takes time to make progress.

I believe any police officer who abuses their position and powers should serve their full sentence too. Police are entrusted with huge responsibility, and when that trust is abused, there must be real accountability. We need to restore public trust in the police.
