Months after the September 11 terrorist attacks, recovery operations at Ground Zero transformed the site from a smoldering pile of debris into an excavation reaching bedrock. Emergency personnel, construction crews, and engineers worked around the clock under hazardous conditions to clear roughly 1.8 million tons of wreckage while painstakingly searching for the remains of victims. The complex operation required stabilizing the subterranean slurry wall to prevent flooding from the Hudson River, managing persistent underground fires, and safely navigating unstable ruins, ultimately concluding months ahead of initial schedule estimates.
- Crews removed roughly 1.8 million tons of debris and twisted steel from the 16-acre World Trade Center site during continuous recovery efforts.
- Forensic specialists, firefighters, and police officers maintained a meticulous search process to locate and identify victim remains amid the rubble.
- Engineers prioritized stabilizing and repairing the foundational slurry wall, commonly known as “the bathtub,” to prevent Hudson River water from flooding the site and adjacent subway tunnels.
- Heavy equipment operators and first responders contended with subterranean fires and toxic smoke that persisted beneath the wreckage for months.
- The clearing and recovery operation concluded significantly earlier than original government estimates, reaching bedrock level through coordinated multi-agency efforts.

TO ALL FIRST RESPONDERS SALUTE 😢💔
Crazy how they can fire him and re-air his reporting.
To think Muslims wanted to build a mosque at or near ground zero. Last week hundreds of Muslims played out loud in Manhappen. If it is a peaceful religion then why such shows of force.,
Ha Ha, Scott got CANNED!
sad
WOW. 2:13 makes it so clear what was lost. It was everything. The whole damn complex.
eerie to think how many bodies were in that pit they were digging in..
ahhh yes, back when 60 minutes actually meant something.
wow…… I haven't seen videos of the bathtub in the early stages in years. I started working there as a union plumber before they put that ramp into the hole. There were only two ways down back then, there was a scaffold to walk down or a stairway that was part of the existing building from the street level. Our first job was to replace the galvanized pneumatic lines in the tunnels from the trade center to exchange place in Jersey. It was grueling work that went around the clock 7 days a week (different shifts) I remember very clearly my first day there…..myself and all my coworkers were in shock when first walking through the site. I remember very clearly, our shanty was in an area of the existing parking garage and in some spots the concrete was completely burnt from the fire and 15 feet away it looked like nothing happened….. parking spot lines on the floor, stop signs…. very strange. I was 23 years old (now 48) and worked there for 9 years. I played a part in building the underground infrastructure, memorial building, reflecting pools, path station, and tower one. To this day I still have my ID badges….. wish I had we had camera phones back then. Thankfully I never got sick. I knew a few that unfortunately got cancer years later.
