2. Ukraine can't defeat Russia, and, although difficult in the very long run, Russia can opt for some lower level of destruction which would not seem like capitulation.
3. Although uncertain and complicated, Russia still has the US ready to throw Ukraine under the bus. This is really Putin's big trump card.
The very major sticking point is that neither side thinks the other can win. This is a condition which must be utterly surprising for both sides. So both can opt to stay in the fight until some significant condition changes, but there doesn't seem to be any in the horizon.
So there is no room for negotiating, really. The only option is to continue fighting.
It must be said, though, that if this goes on indefinitely it doesn't look good for Putin or Russia.
