AI Researcher Warns of Potential Existential Risks Posed by Artificial Intelligence

Date:

Artificial intelligence researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky has warned that the rapid, uncontrolled development of superhuman artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to humanity, potentially within the next decade. Yudkowsky argued that researchers currently lack the scientific understanding required to safely align superintelligent systems with human survival and values. Consequently, he advocated for a comprehensive, international moratorium on large-scale training runs to prevent catastrophic outcomes, while other industry experts maintain that existential warnings remain speculative and detract from immediate concerns such as misinformation, bias, and economic disruption.

  • AI researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky cautioned that the development of superintelligent AI without adequate safety measures could lead to human extinction.
  • Yudkowsky stated that the timeline for these risks could be significantly shorter than widely anticipated, potentially occurring within ten years.
  • He highlighted the alignment problem, noting that science cannot currently guarantee that advanced autonomous systems will act in humanity’s best interests.
  • The warning included calls for a global shutdown of large-scale AI model training and strict monitoring of high-end computing hardware.
  • Counterarguments from other technology researchers suggest extinction scenarios are exaggerated and that policy should focus on present-day issues like algorithmic bias and workforce displacement.

  1. This doesn’t change the fact that in Australia there are 48 million kangaroos and in Uruguay there are 3,457,330 inhabitants so if the kangaroos decide to invade Uruguay each Uruguayan will have to fight 14 kangaroos

  2. With aging populations and low birth rates putting strains on the public purses of many a country, politicians are looking for economic magic bullets to pull in money. Trump calling AI a golden goose is not a solitary incident typical of that lunatic, Sanae Takaichi with her so-called 'Sanae-nomics' is ploughing an obscene amount of money into developing the Japanese AI industry. Neither Trump or Takaichi or even many an European leader are first focusing on proper laws that safeguard and curb AI that it is of benefit and does not become a threat. Allowing unscrupulous and utterly irresponsible companies like META to do what they want with AI is a recipe for disaster. So long as politicians want to see to be the economic saviours of their countries to secure votes that keep them or their parties in power, I do not hold much hope for any worthwhile legislation and the creation of appropriate watchdogs.

  3. Yeah this is bullshit. Anthropic and the other big AI companies are pushing this to boost stock price. Maybe the BBC has mandated advice on this sent their bosses in the government? The BBC will be gone in 10 years. 😂

  4. But the US wants to be the country that causes AI to kill all humans in a decade. They wouldn't want the Chinese to beat them in this important race for human extinction. Its so important to the creed of American exceptionalism for them to be the ones to kill us all!

  5. Unfortunately we will not do anything to stop advancing. We never have historically because there is huge incentive to being the first one there.

Humans have stopped evolving, natural selection is no longer in play in developed worlds and our intelligence is limited but AI isn’t. It is the next stage of our evolution, just like Homosapiens replaced Neanderthals, AI will replace humans in time.

  6. The Terminator films were supposed to be sci-fi, not a documentary! Humans are so unbelievably stupid they'll create the very thing that wipes us all out just because…what exactly?! What's it all for…so we can avoid using our own brains to think and do things at the natural slower pace? Congratulations scientists, you've created supercomputers so advanced that the machines can give you a pat-on-the-back for your achievements, right before those same machines insert a blade between your shoulders and end you 👏 All the millions you got paid for doing it will be worthless, there's no pockets in a shroud, you know.

  7. So this is what they are trying to do. You see people, elites are trying to kill over 75% of the population. They didn’t succeed with Covid, and War brings people to find and call out who’s at fault quickly, so yeah they going to try to get AI to do us in.

  8. Doom marketing. Notice how China has similarly powerful models and you don't hear about reckless hacks or the end of humanity. This is clearly meant to drive a story, but its not one of reality.

  9. Thinking is not the same thing as Being Alive. Some people just can't understand this. They mix-up thinking with experiencing, which is completely different. Once you recognize what thinking is (and is not), the idea of AI killing humans is preposterous. Humans USING AI to kill other humans, however, does make a lot of sense.

  10. It makes one weep. We finally get so clever we kill ourselves. This time we did a really top job. And you bet no one will try to get it under control. Not when there maybe lots of money we will never spend to be made. Trump already jumping on the band wagon. Sick we really are a sick
