In a rebroadcast report exploring archaeological discoveries in Central America, researchers examine how advanced airborne laser scanning has fundamentally reshaped historical understanding of the ancient Maya civilization. Utilizing LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology over the dense jungles of northern Guatemala, scientists digitally stripped away the forest canopy to map extensive, previously hidden urban networks. The scans revealed tens of thousands of undiscovered structures, including monumental pyramids, agricultural systems, and elevated causeways, demonstrating that the ancient Maya maintained a much larger, densely populated, and sophisticated society than earlier archaeological evidence had indicated.
- The report, originally broadcast in an earlier segment, focuses on archaeological research conducted across the Petén region of northern Guatemala.
- Airborne LiDAR technology was used to penetrate thick jungle foliage by firing rapid laser pulses to map topographical features on the ground below.
- Surveys uncovered more than 60,000 individual structures, encompassing residential complexes, defensive fortresses, irrigation canals, and ceremonial pyramids.
- Archaeologists identified expansive networks of elevated stone causeways linking major urban centers, indicating complex regional governance and trade.
- The findings suggest that the Maya population may have reached upwards of 10 to 15 million inhabitants during its classic period, significantly surpassing earlier academic estimates.

Great Richard!
8:56 he wouldn't be saying that if he took one look at what tourism did to places like Egypt and Easter island.
Mr. Hanson has decided he is the "White Savior of the Mayan Ruins".
He wants to separate Native Guatemalans from their God-given land like the Europeans did to Africans. We're still living with the evil of that decision today 😢
Will the pyramid ever be dug out of the jungle?
Archaeological colonisation!
Don’t trust him
Thanks for showings the beautiful places
Why should we care about blow dart jungle culture?
The Maya DID NOT disappear though, they're still here! My fiancee has Maya blood
This is one of my favorite YouTube channels. I'm American and I rather watch 60 minutes Australia rather than the American 60 minutes lol
Fascinating content, educational, and entertaining. Well done and never stop doing the awesome work only 60 minutes Australia can do! ❤😊
Hanson is extremely insulting to me and my people. How dare he speak as though we are gone, as though we are too stupid or incapable of taking care of our own land, and as though we are some completely different species rather than living, present-day people with a deep connection to our homeland. The sheer arrogance and disrespect in the way he talks about us is infuriating!!!
Jaguar paw was brought here for human sacrifice
Just about everything they tell you about our ancient history is a straight up guess, don't be gullible people.
Nothing suspicious they died from small pox no immune system to deal with it
The fact that that Richard Hansen guy picks up a piece of artefact that nobody’s held, and he just out of the dirt that’s all fucking orchestrated guys got autism and he’s trying to solve his own clues or answer his own questions. Anytime, I see a man in bolding about something I gotta see that something fishy about it. The world is destined for destruction and you know who’s leading it man the zealot the power hungry the ones trying to protect civilization yet not protecting the indigenous cultures. We’re screwed. I am sorry I love my children, but what if I brought them into? I guess live every day like it’s your last cause. It fucking could be this day and age I’m 60 and I feel hopeless. I wanna live 120 more years or something but no quality everybody’s hates each other. Certain groups are sticking together and not helping everybody’s divisive. There’s no love and charity in the world for real everybody’s got a price on their charity fucking work my ass off and care about everybody just to see people all these digging in for themselves. I’m so tired of it all. I don’t know what to do and I can’t retire. I can’t afford to retire. I don’t have a house all the young people they can complain yeah we’ll try paying for your house three or four times over with extra mortgages and divorces and families and people who complain they can’t buy a house you’ve got no kids and no responsibilities fuck off
When a stone age culture can do what they did, mega cities, art, sculpture, written language, advanced agriculture and much more. Stack that up against Australian Aboriginal culture
Washington State civilization is collapsing now you can literally all watch it unfolding in real time. There will be books and documentaries about the corruption and equity stripping in 10 years I guarantee it.
Source: I worked for these people.
What is his relationship to the indigenous people in that area and who gave him the right to claim the area and create his own laws? Sadly, this is a repeat in history of oppression of indigenous people and the belief that the foreigners have the right to stake claims and decide the faith of those who he does not have ties to that particular land. Extremely sad.
Yeah, this guy is total moron. Went existential white scientist wannabe Indiana Jones.
I went to Tikal, plenty of tourism there already.. yes it all needs to be protected..
PSA this documentary is 22 years old, many beliefs stated in this documentary were misinformed by the time and probably are no longer held by the people in this video
from 2004 …OOOOLD outdated info
Look at the height of those steps , as they climb that temple. There Not for normal size humans to walk up. Much larger people walked up those steps. Those 2 people had to use there hands & feet to get up there. More likely the structures were already there & the Maya Civilisation claimed them. These Mayan people were short , where these steps were for people around 8 feet. Unless you want to say , they shrunk down in height over the course of history to the Maya people of today. History is Not always told the truth.
I think the maya found these and that they are ancient. Like 10-20000 years old.
Just like the rest of the megaliths of the earth.
If this was in Australia you'd have dipshits saying…. but where's the wheel😂
"D" is definitely for deluded.
It's their land. Let the people have it to do with it, what they want.
crazy how much Lidar and remote sensing has revealed since then. It is literally all wrong what they are saying.
It's always been protected. The Guatemalan people know it's there, it's their history. Then comes a colonizer who believes he owns abd is the only one who can protect the ruins. All by inviting the wealthy to visit not it's people of the land to whom it belongs.
