I read a brief article the other day where some farmers growing silage grow certain strains of corn and soy together (15 inches apart). At harvest the corn is mature and the soy is not yet mature (so no beans). This results in a quarter more mass, and double the protein for animal feed.
Nitrogen fertilizer is used for corn, not soy (legumes and their microbiome fix nitrogen). Growing corn and soy together would allow less, or maybe no, nitrogen fertilizer needed. Together with the greater biomass and greater protein this would be a win-win for silage production.
