NASA Announces Initiative to Establish a Long-Term Human Presence on the Moon

Date:

NASA has introduced a new initiative aimed at establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon through its Artemis program. The mission focuses on developing sustainable infrastructure, including a lunar orbiting station and a base camp at the south pole. This long-term strategy is designed to facilitate scientific discovery and foster a lunar economy while serving as a critical testing ground for future missions to Mars. By partnering with international space agencies and private industry, NASA intends to ensure that lunar exploration remains a continuous and collaborative human endeavor.

  • The Artemis program seeks to return astronauts to the lunar surface and maintain a sustainable presence for the first time in history.
  • NASA plans to build the Lunar Gateway, an orbital outpost that will facilitate repeated trips to the Moon and support long-term stays.
  • Exploration efforts are focused on the lunar south pole, where the presence of water ice could provide essential resources for life support and rocket fuel.
  • The initiative relies on extensive collaborations with international partners and commercial space flight companies to share costs and technical expertise.
  • Establishing a permanent lunar presence is considered a foundational step in developing the technologies required for eventual human travel to Mars.

  1. Not sure why NASA cancelled the lunar space station to build a surface base instead. It's a much harder job to accomplish. Hell, they delayed the crewed landing from III to IV.

  2. This is the first segment DW has produced in the last two plus years that I have given a thumbs up on. Please make more like this and not the other clearly political and biased segments. This one was great!

  3. Not to put a damper on things , and i do hope all plans are met , but sense i been born every spaceship that has attempted to go there has come back down in pieces no traces of the astronauts to my knowledge

  4. America, can't even figure out universal healthcare or understand how tarriffs work. They think they can build on the moon 😂. China will probably beat USA if any country is going to waste the money on it.

  5. Nope, the contract writers (Trump hires) will work with the Military Industrial Complex to develop components with no expectation they actually get the moon. cough cough Bezos. Musk getting big big $$$$ contracts.

  6. 20bln over 7 years is nothing for USA. Our defense budget for FY2026, for comparison, is 961.6b. The amount of return the economy gets from NASA's inventions and innovations is tremendously valuable to society (think healthcare, aviation, engineering & technology). We should be spending more on NASA and general science research.

  7. Mankind looks well set to convert mother earth itself into one of those
lifeless extraterrestrial worlds in outer space – (climate change, pollutions, pandemics, famines…)
The thought of "enduring" on the moon or else in outer space, whilst destroying your survival base seems absurd!
