The Role of West African Tirailleurs in the Liberation of Europe during World War II

Date:

The Tirailleurs Sénégalais, colonial infantry recruited from across sub-Saharan Africa, played a vital role in the French military effort during World War II. These soldiers were instrumental in liberating parts of Europe from Nazi occupation, yet their contributions were often overlooked in post-war historical narratives. Recent efforts have aimed to provide these veterans and their descendants with proper recognition, addressing long-standing issues such as pension inequality and the historical “whitening” of the troops during the final stages of the war.

  • The Tirailleurs Sénégalais were colonial troops from French West and Equatorial Africa who served in the French Army during both World Wars.
  • These soldiers fought extensively during World War II, participating in the liberation of France and the Allied advance into Germany.
  • Historical accounts indicate that African troops were often marginalized after the war, including a process where Black soldiers were replaced by white ones during the liberation of Paris.
  • Returning veterans faced significant challenges, including the 1944 Thiaroye massacre, where soldiers were killed while protesting for unpaid wages and benefits.
  • For decades, many African veterans received significantly lower pensions than their French-born counterparts, a policy that has only recently faced legal and political reversals.
  • Recent films and government initiatives have sought to bring the legacy of the Tirailleurs into the public eye to ensure their role in European liberation is documented.

  1. In the great country of Kenya the former soldiers of the Kings African Rifles( Anake' a forty) fought for the British crown in WW2. After the end of the war , they came back empty handed and disillusioned. The former soldiers went on to form the Kenya Land Freedom army( mau mau) which liberated Kenya from the British colonial Empire.
