Assessing Russia’s Future as a Global Power Amid the Conflict in Ukraine

Date:

Russia is undergoing a significant shift in its foreign policy and global standing as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to strain its national resources. While Moscow previously sought a prominent role as a global power balancing East and West, it is increasingly pivoting toward strategic partnerships with nations like China, Iran, and North Korea. This shift indicates a narrower focus on regional security and economic survival under heavy international sanctions, potentially signaling a move away from its long-held ambitions of being a primary pillar in a multipolar world order.

  • The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has significantly limited Russia’s ability to project military and diplomatic power on a global scale.
  • International sanctions have forced a major economic reorientation toward Asian markets and non-Western financial systems.
  • Russia is deepening strategic and military cooperation with North Korea and Iran to sustain its defense requirements and mitigate isolation.
  • Influence in traditional spheres of interest, including Central Asia and the Caucasus, is declining as regional neighbors seek alternative security partners.
  • The Kremlin has largely abandoned its “Greater Europe” vision in favor of a “Greater Eurasia” policy that emphasizes ties with the Global South.

  1. Russia was never a global power in some ways… most of its meaningful influence & reach was established under the Soviet Union and its largely been all downhill from there. It’s really sad TBH, since Russia has tremendous expertise and educated human resources that could be used to rebuild its economy and standing in the world. Look at what has happened to its aerospace, military, science, & technology sectors… they all have lost their stature from being among the top in the world to crumbling & sad shadows. If it weren’t for China, Russia would be a useless shell. They have become an unruly vassal state to China.

  2. Russia is at best a minor or regional power. I cannot projektt power in Ukraine, much less globally. I agree with your expert, but coach it as master manipulators, a low form of quasi power. Did Russian manipulation cause the Iran conflict and the closing of the straight? Very possibly their machinations are predictable and in cash terms the last 2 months have been a short term gain, who stood to benefit from the closure of the strait most, Russia. Combine that with regular meetings with that Netanyahu creature, who in my observation is the most corrupting influence on earth for more than a decade..

  3. Zelensky must understand he has no chance against Russia! He should capitulate and turn Ukraine into a Russian Oblast, with him as locar governor, at best. Historically speaking Ukraine has always been part of the Russian Empire anyways….

  4. Russia is a middle power? Sounds like it'd make a natural ally for Canada then. Mark Carney should give Putin a call. After all, he did say middle powers need to band together.

  5. In reality, if Russia fails to conquer Ukraine and keeps losing battles by the end of the year, a few conservatives (that belonged to Navalnyists), some liberals, countless moderates and progressives decide to stage a civil war against Putinists across the country.

  6. Maybe on hindsight Putin may regret invading Ukraine. The cost of that war will affect Russia for a long time. I do not see Russia as superpower anymore and it may take long for it to regain that position. Poor Russia!

  7. Who said Russia was a superpower?? No one!!! This isn’t the Soviet Union. Russia is a poor country with the same GDP as Texas!! They’re a paper tiger.
