Our economic and societal models are failing {I direct you to the recent Kurzgesagt video for just one aspect of this) and our governments seemingly fail to realise that instead continue caring only for the wellbeing of the wealthy and old instead of doing anything to adress things.

The wealth gap continues to widen, the middle class continues to disappear, the faces our societies are increasingly ever more unrecognizable… And this has been going on for decades now… I don't think it fair to put the blame on the "electorate that wants instant gratification and quick fixes". Every politician that is seen as supporting the changes listed above will be unpopular among the people who are harmed by these changes (which happens to be the majority). They will, however, be very popular among those classes which benefit from the transfer of wealth and power.
Europe, North America and Australia have all had 40+ years of mostly 'centrist' governments wedded to neoliberal ideology and it is these two components that are failing having been accepted as undisputable hegemony since the early 80s. Add-in the usual corruption, dishonesty and scandal and its no wonder that voters are so sick and tired of the same empty promises and completely ineffectual policies.
