A growing trend labeled “decline porn” is surfacing across social media and financial commentary, highlighting perceived economic and social decay within Europe. This narrative often focuses on stagnant growth, high energy prices, and aging demographics to argue that the continent is facing terminal irrelevance. While real challenges like slow digitalization and deindustrialization exist, experts suggest these reports often overlook Europe’s ongoing strengths in green technology and high standards of living. This phenomenon is increasingly being utilized by various actors to influence public perception and policy.
- Critics and social media users are increasingly promoting narratives of European economic collapse, specifically targeting the continent’s largest economies.
- Economic data shows Europe’s share of global GDP has decreased significantly over the last two decades compared to the United States and China.
- Structural issues such as high energy costs and a labor shortage due to an aging workforce are central to the decline narrative.
- The term “decline porn” refers to the sensationalist consumption of negative news regarding infrastructure failures and industrial stagnation.
- Supporters of European resilience argue that the continent remains a global leader in sustainability and social well-being despite current economic headwinds.
- Geopolitical analysts note that narratives of decline are frequently amplified by external rivals to weaken European soft power and internal cohesion.

Germany trying to improve its image is hilarious. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Whoever come up with the term, decline, porn, needs to head to the woodshed.
Socialism isn’t “progressive”, it’s regressive and promotes laziness. Plus it never seems to help the people that actually deserve it and need it.
This is just a grift
Nah. It just showing the realities of socialism.
One of the reasons why EU needs to regulate US media ASAP. I've seen a similar video like those the other day, of some brit tourists around a very degraded zone in Lisbon, that has been like that for many many decades, as long as I remember. And the people in the comments were just making completely out of context judgements, and even suggesting that that zoned turned out like that due to "recent immigration policies", without even understanding how those zones exist or even for how long. And any big city has such zones… Europe cities have them and so do American ones.
Yes these videos are somewhat selective and somewhat hyperbolic but they are also about real places with real problems. Don't get mad at the messenger , get mad at the politicians who created the mess.
For grifters look at Harry and Meghan parading in Bondi Beach, Australia!
Kurt caz 😊 You know it's crazy when he travels to South America and Southeast Asia and they have more friendlier locales than in Europe
Get lost, DW, just get outside your office and ask yourself whether Europe is rising or declining. I have visited multiple countries of Europe about every other year and you can't deny that even on average streets have been getting dirtier, people have been getting less (European-) cultural and services have been getting poorer. You can't do anything about it, it is true, you have to adjust. But pretending that nothing has been happening is just weak and misleading.
