Ghanaians Return Home Amid Escalating Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

Date:

Increasingly frequent xenophobic attacks and rising anti-foreigner sentiment in South Africa are prompting many Ghanaian migrants to flee the country and return home. Hostility against foreign nationals, often fueled by economic frustrations and targeted community campaigns, has made South Africa unsafe for many African migrants. Upon returning to Ghana, many of these individuals face significant challenges, including financial instability, psychological distress, and difficulties reintegrating into the local economy after years of living abroad.

  • A growing number of Ghanaian migrants are leaving South Africa due to escalating violence and safety concerns.
  • Anti-foreigner sentiment in South Africa is often driven by high unemployment, poverty, and the scapegoating of migrants for local economic challenges.
  • Organized movements in South Africa have actively targeted foreign nationals, leading to raids on businesses and physical displacement.
  • Returning migrants face difficult reintegration processes in Ghana, often struggling to secure employment and housing.
  • Advocates are calling for improved support systems and government-backed reintegration programs to assist returning citizens in rebuilding their lives.

  1. Immigration is a wonderful thing, but open borders aren't. And attacking immigrants is a lawless activity that should be stopped. The government needs to be proactive and gather all parties together to find a viable way forward. However, the Ghanaian representative is disingenuous, talking about how none of the Ghanaians have criminal records. How can that be when the vast majority don't have proper documentation? I say this because at O.R. Tambo, out of 300 Ghanaians who left, only 10 had proper documentation. How can that be okay? Clearly, this situation needs to be addressed by the government, but they have been dragging their feet. Also, the expert isn't clear about kids being prevented from attending school; he is misdirecting the problem. South African kids weren't able to attend public schools near their neighborhoods, yet foreign kids took all their spots. How is that okay? There should be a diplomatic way to resolve this issue. I can sort of understand both parties. It doesn't seem like a difficult situation to understand and solve. We all know what is right and what should be done, but we're quick to make excuses and to be defensive.

  2. Let the UN Security Council make South Africa economically isolated like Zimbabwe or Venezuela by blocking all exports from South Africa due to the alleged government-sponsored, genocide-like activities of the current minority ANC party and President Cyril Ramaphosa in South Africa, as well as the cruelty shown by some citizens against vulnerable people and the mass destruction of property and wealth hard-earned by hardworking individuals. Suspend South Africa’s UN membership immediately for its alleged actions against humanity. Block access to air navigation services, port licenses, electricity generator tech, and electronics as well.

  3. From just one person to over 300 people showing up for the flight — that’s growth, impact, and real support. Big respect to everyone who believed in the journey. This is only the beginning ✈️🔥

  4. I love how many think march and march & operation Dudula have a colonialist agenda. But the NGOs, Kaax & other anti SA groups are directly led by yts 😂😂

  5. Construction machinary is on sale in first world countrys meby they could build thier owns apartments in Ghana so they dont get imbaresed and kicked out of anouther country its just measurment tape and blueprint they can do it to.

  6. For some extra context on this story, South African immigration officials say only 10 of nearly 300 Ghanaians registered for voluntary return were legally living in the country. Home Affairs official Stephen van Neel said most were undocumented, non-compliant, or had overstayed their permits. The development comes amid ongoing tensions in South Africa over immigration, where foreign nationals have faced hostility and accusations of taking jobs meant for South Africans.

  7. This is why Al Jazeera is a much better news source. They have repeatedly said the protest is against "undocumented immigration.", given how the Western World has treated immigrants over the last few years, the haughtiness of this news anchor's tone is quite laughable

  8. The funny thing is that the Ghanaian government could only repatriate those who were documented, who aren’t a problem in South Africa, but couldn’t repatriate the undocumented ones, who are the real issue.

  9. He fails to mention that the challenges are as a result of many business choosing to employ undocumented immigrant instead of South Africans to avoid paying minimum regulated salaries.
