How Dynamic Pricing and Renewable Energy Surpluses Enable Consumers to Earn Money

Date:

Advancements in renewable energy and smart grid technologies are enabling consumers to transition from passive energy buyers into active grid participants capable of generating income. By leveraging dynamic pricing models, residential solar installations, and home battery storage, households can sell excess electricity back to the grid when demand and prices are highest. This shift helps stabilize local energy infrastructure during peak load times while providing direct financial returns to participating consumers.

  • Dynamic electricity tariffs allow consumers to buy energy when prices are low or negative and sell it back to the utility grid when prices peak.
  • Home battery storage systems and solar panels enable residential properties to store cheap or self-generated power for strategic redistribution.
  • Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology allows electric vehicle owners to use their car batteries to feed power back into the grid, creating an additional revenue stream.
  • Smart energy management software automatically manages these systems, optimizing the timing of electricity trades to maximize economic benefits.

  1. Where exactly in EU can I, a consumer, get electricity contract that will PAY ME when wholesale prices are negative!? Which energy supplier in Sweden ( you mentioned it ) does that? Can you please be specific? Or are you just spreading misinformation!?

  2. This is only in Germany, in Greece you always pay the highest price demanded by gas plants that are working at night. There are no savings here for the consumers. The system is so distorted that we send the free electricity from solar to Bulgaria and buy again from them at night at market prices.

  3. This is not the old era where survival meant just having food. Today, raising a child requires stability, planning, and responsibility. If we lack financial stability and resources, it is unfair to bring a child into a life of struggle and suffering. Life is tough, and opportunities are not guaranteed. Having children is a serious responsibility, not a social obligation.👥

  4. I was on Octopus Energy's Agile tariff in UK for a bit – it features negative-price energy episodes. We used to say we were 'hunting Pokemons' and had a tree-like extension lead gizmo into which we plugged oil-filled radiators and fan heaters, with doors and windows open in summer, so we could maximise our benefit from the negative prices and 'help out'. There were days that we 'earned' more than we spent. We paid slightly under the standard rate, on long average, on that tariff but it was too much like hard work to achieve the savings.

The answer to the problem is obvious for all of us in Western Europe: we should dispatchably synthesise e-NG (renewable natural gas) from air-captured CO₂ whenever we have surplus renewable electricity. Every other 'solution' doesn't really solve the problem. Everyone's fighting against their silly idea that they can electrify or decarbonise everything, when doing that won't work and doesn't even offer a Climate Change remedy.

  5. Unless you install a large battery and go off grid, the Electric company will come up with all type of creative charge for you to pay. I just watched a youtubers video recently, he have a $30k solar setup and still paying PG&E about 8k per year. That is $600 per month, I think regular electric bill probably cost less than installing those solar panels.

  6. In Slovakia, I have a smart meter with a day/night tariff. I pay around €100 per month. My house runs entirely on electricity, including a heat pump. About half of my bill consists of grid and distribution fees.

I know about negative electricity prices, but they are not available for households. Even generating electricity with solar panels is not always cost-effective if you cannot use most of it in your household or for EV charging. The return on investment is often quite low because the electricity you feed back into the grid is bought at a very low price.

That is why there is no universal solution. Each country has different regulations, energy prices, and market conditions.

  7. This is how you incentivize private build out of battery infrastructure. They'll charge to full whenever the price is negative and fully discharge at peak pricing

  8. Telling the truth to someone is a real form of invention too. Not every great invention is a machine, a technology, or a scientific breakthrough. Some of the greatest inventions in history have changed the way people live, think, and grow.

Today, life is already difficult for many people. Employment opportunities are limited, work is hard to find, and many families struggle to make ends meet. In such circumstances, every decision carries weight, and often it is the children who suffer the most from the consequences of poor choices.

That is why we should be careful with our actions and considerate in our words. No one deserves unnecessary pain or hardship. A little honesty, wisdom, and kindness can have a greater impact than we realize. Every decision should be made thoughtfully, keeping in mind not only ourselves but also those who may be affected by it, especially the younger generation.🫣
