Hundreds of Foreign Nationals Leave South Africa Amid Rising Xenophobia

Date:

Hundreds of foreign nationals have begun leaving South Africa to return to their home countries amid a rise in xenophobic sentiment and targeted violence. Many migrants, particularly from neighboring African nations, cite safety concerns, harassment, and economic pressure as primary reasons for their departure. Human rights organizations and local authorities are monitoring the situation as repatriation efforts get underway, highlighting ongoing societal tensions surrounding immigration, unemployment, and community security in the region.

  • Hundreds of foreign citizens are voluntarily repatriating from South Africa due to escalating security concerns and anti-foreigner hostility.
  • The departures follow a series of protests and targeted incidents aimed at undocumented migrants and foreign-owned businesses.
  • Many of those leaving are returning to neighboring Southern African countries, including Zimbabwe and Malawi.
  • Civil society groups and humanitarian organizations are assisting with transport and calling for government intervention to address the root causes of the social tension.

  1. How Cyril Ramaphosa is not in prison yet should be the biggest question on everyone’s mind. Him and the ANC has totally looted and destroyed South Africa, blatant obvious corruption with no consequences. The ANC is starting to run out of people to blame. But the direction they’re going I wouldn’t be surprised to see Civil War as early as next year.

  2. 🤣I love the "scapegoating" quip.
Lived experience! The local drug dealers are Nigerian. My best friend's wife received death threats when she organised the comunity against them! Glad to see them gone!
The nearest church to me the local pod of Nigerians tried to get me to build nuclear reactors for them! They are nicer people; I am seasoned egoli citizen, so tuesday. Sadder to see them go, but having them gone will be better for German tourists; Germans are more naive I suppose …

  3. Again, someone living in Rondebosch will be as isolated from the day to day experience of South Africans as someone living in Sandton or someone based in Oxford. I appreciate DW for finding someone with the right opinion living and working in South Africa. I live in a suburb in which a lot of the middle managers that keep the city running live. The lived experience is very different!
