Economic and Political Challenges Drive Rising Youth Emigration from Turkey

Date:

A growing number of young people in Turkey are contemplating leaving the country due to ongoing economic instability, high inflation, and diminishing career prospects. Many students and young professionals cite escalating living costs, concerns over academic freedom, and limited professional meritocracy as key factors driving them to seek opportunities abroad. This increasing trend of emigration among educated youth, often characterized as a brain drain, presents long-term challenges for the country’s economic and social development.

  • Severe economic pressure, marked by high inflation and a weakening currency, has significantly reduced the purchasing power and quality of life for young citizens.
  • Many university graduates face high underemployment, struggling to find jobs that align with their academic qualifications.
  • Concerns regarding political polarization, restricted freedom of expression, and perceived favoritism in hiring practices heavily influence the desire to emigrate.
  • Highly skilled sectors, particularly healthcare, engineering, and technology, are experiencing a notable loss of qualified personnel to European and other international markets.

  1. Honestly they should. It’s not so much about Turkey specifically. It’s more about being young and in a place without potential. You squander your breakout years in a place where you have to swim upstream. The truth is it won’t be easy anywhere. But there certainly are places that will be more frictionless or less frictionless. Few people can fix a country within a lifetime. But almost anyone can improve their own life within a lifetime.

There’s also the fact that when you’re old is when you’re most able to make a difference on a national scale. Few people can be Greta or Malala, making a difference at young ages. Use those years to build yourself and if you really want to fix your home, return later after you’ve spent wisely your best years. It’s a big gamble with very poor odds to risk your youth fighting totalitarianism.

  2. One word: inflation.
Turkey has had substantial high inflation since 2019, and of course the real numbers area easily +50% what the Tukstat publishes.

You can't build a future when your purchasing power for basic necessities is eroding every month, and nothing is being done from the government.

  3. The problem is that those who could, have already left or will leave. Those who remain are conservative and approve of the regime and therefore nothing will improve….

  4. Looking to Iran ….
Islam have tendency to turning to radicalism …
    But now Turkish people …
    Pretty European look …
And it's very good sign …
    About economic problems …
    Its could be fix …

  5. The same could be said about Germany, a struggling economy and a government that has arrested and prosecuted people for expressing support for Palestine or opposing the Russia–Ukraine war.

  6. 2026 Turkey:
    Culture: Brazil
    Economicy: Argentina
    Education: Mexico
    Corruption: Russia
    Health: India

The only thing that has improved since 2003 is defense, yet we are sucking up ex-kurdish terrorists.
