France and Spain Battle Wildfires Amid New European Heatwave

Date:

Firefighters in France and Spain are working to contain spreading wildfires as Southwestern Europe experiences another intense heatwave. Soaring temperatures and dry conditions have fueled fires across several regions, destroying thousands of hectares of forest and forcing thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate. Emergency services in both countries are utilizing water-dropping aircraft and ground crews to protect residential areas, while officials warn that extreme heat will persist over the coming days, compounding the firefighting challenges.

  • Wildfires are actively burning across multiple regions in France and Spain due to elevated temperatures and prolonged dry conditions.
  • Thousands of residents and tourists have been evacuated from high-risk zones to ensure public safety.
  • Emergency response personnel, supported by specialized firefighting aircraft, are deployed to protect homes and critical infrastructure.

  1. Wondering if it would be cheaper to keep the forests wet during the summer to prevent fires instead of trying to control large fires outbreaks. Dumping water everyday by planes or other means before a fire takes hold.

  4. To those who are insisting that this is the work of arsonists.

Arsonists can't put tens of thousands of hectars on fire in a couole of days unless the vegetation is extremely dry and there is hot dry wind.

The main reason why these fires got these dimensions is climate change.

What comes on top is poor land management: rural exodus leaves large swathes of former cultural landscape abandonded, goats and sheep herds that used to control the grasslands are now gone, containment lanes are not beibg maintained properly, and rainy winters have boosted vegetation there that is now extremely dry.

In large parts of Spain and Portugal people grow eucalyptus trees that are called the arsonists of the plant realm for a reason.

Around Bordeaux there are large man-made pine forests planted for timber that burn like crazy too.

Abandoned vinyards might have played a role too because vintners got subsidies to clear (!) Their vinyards in recent years to keep wine prices from dropping. These abandoned vinyards are often left to themselves.

But again, the reason why all this can get so much put of hand is getting more frequent and more extreme by the year is climate change.

  5. All those northern European cheap flights to Med releasing huge amounts of CO2, and the urbanisation of France and Spain so fewer herds keeping foliage down, all adds up sadly to these events. This was predicted in the 1960s. This will only get worse, best can be done is just ban all flying and bring back a local arable village society.

  6. The reality is, climate change denier or not, each developed and developing economy would have to make massive changes to their society in ways that just are not possible, and to do it at the same time to make a difference to this so called man-made climate change . Face facts. We have to burn fossil fuels to run the global economy. If we don't we are going back to living standards of the 1800s. Say good bye to your holidays abroad and all the technology which you enjoy and makes your live easier. Do you really want to give up your comfortable life for something that is probably a fictional problem?
