US-Canada Trade Talks Collapse Amid Concerns Over Economic Fallout

Date:

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have stalled following disagreements over cross-border tariffs and trade policies. The breakdown in talks raises concerns over potential economic fallout, including increased costs for businesses and consumers in both nations. Key areas of contention include tariffs on vital goods, supply chain dependencies, and regulatory disagreements. As formal discussions pause, officials and economic analysts are evaluating the broader impact on North American trade relations, with industries preparing for potential retaliatory measures and heightened market uncertainty.

  • Bilateral trade talks between the United States and Canada have ended without a resolution regarding key trade disputes.
  • The impasse increases the likelihood of renewed tariffs on cross-border goods and manufacturing inputs.
  • Key sectors affected by the stalled negotiations include agriculture, automotive manufacturing, and energy.
  • Analysts indicate that additional tariffs and trade barriers would likely lead to higher prices for consumers and businesses in both markets.
  • Both governments are considering next steps as the pause in negotiations creates uncertainty for North American supply chains.

  1. Who is getting paid might be the better question. If only Canada had gifted Trump a golden moose statue this could all have been avoided. Time for regime change in America. Can all the damage he has done to the world be undone? America isn't becoming "Great" at the expense of it's own people or anyone else's. The only one getting rich is the Con man they allow to continue to be president. Canadians will never bend the knee King Donny, just stop already. You are making us feel sorry for helping to prop up your economy all these years. Can your economy even avoid collapse at this point? You think destroying your best friends economy makes yours stronger? Your train is off the rails and headed for the biggest financial crash in American history. When it does you will need your friends to help you but you seem to think eating them is a better idea. This is what happens when a failed businessman and Con man is your leader. He just keeps getting richer as the world burns because he doesn't know how to do anything but grift. The commander and thief doesn't get Canada.

  2. Nonsense. We can slap a $5/barrel export tax on crude. America's strategic reserves are at a 50-year low, 30-year bonds are at a 20-year high, inflation is spiking, and their midterms are just 72 days away. Most of Canada's exports are critical to the US. Canadians are united, Americans divided – not to mention utterly unwilling to tolerate higher gas prices at the pump. Canada has the cards. We can wait this out.

  3. In my opinion, the Western world is currently experiencing a crisis because democratic mechanisms have allowed unintelligent populists to come to power. We are all paying the price for this, and our Western civilization is gradually eroding.

  4. Claus Kellerman has a very comprehensive comparison between the losses of the US vs Canada.

Yes, this is hurting Canada. No, we will not capitulate. If the US hasn't figured that out yet, then there's no hope for them.

    🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 CANADA STRONG.

  5. Hockey stick example: the vast majority of hockey sticks buyers are recreational players, LOTS of kids. Families will start shopping for hockey gear in a month or two and are not going to be happy with prices. Just before the mid-terms…..

  6. United States Exports By Country 2025
    Total $2177.13B
    Mexico $337.96B
    Canada $329.65B
    China $106.31B
    United Kingdom $96.80B
    Netherlands $95.64B
    Germany $82.69B
    Japan $82.03B

Yeah, it will hurt us Canadians, but for 43 million people, we buy more from them than from the next three largest markets in the world combined, so they will burn with us!

  7. Unfortunately, mr carney is focused on financial sector, in cutting deals with arab oil countries to invest in Canadian banks. Which is important. But Canadian economy is hurting badly…is felt all over Canada.

  8. Who should we believe in breakdown? The convicted rapist, serial adulterer, pathological lair, tax evader, draft dodger and one of the most despicable human beings on the planet in company of Putin. Or the Harvard and Oxford graduate with two graduate degrees including PHD, former Bank of Canada governor and UK governor, economist and investment banker. You tell me. 🇨🇦 We will not be bullied. F Trump.

  9. We were close to a deal until Lutnick showed up and decided to change the deal because in his mind the term for Canada were too lenient. He didn't like lowering tariff on auto. So they wanted everything they need and screw us on the rest.🇨🇦 We will not be extorted, UK should take notice.

  10. Canada will stand up to a bully–Remember Canada had a trade deal with the US which Trump is violating –No deal with the US is safe, including your country–Canadians are boycotting–Please support Canada and boycott everything USA

  11. As USA will find out once its allies and partners have disentangled themselves from USA military, technology and supply chain, then the influence USA can wield globally will drop sharply. This will not be impacted by a new president – it is a pivotal error on behalf of USA

  12. Canadian here… we are 100% supporting our Trade Team and Prime Minister. What I find astounding is mainstream media’s willingness to quote trump and his minions – known LIARS as truth. Do some research!

  13. Canada is always offered the best deal – it has so many benefits of a state without obligation. Canada is an economy of tariffs – interprovincial tariffs are normalized – and yet US tariffs are demonized. This is a political fight with the provinces which have much more power than states. The US should bypass Ottawa altogether.

  14. I hope the world will take example from our Prime Minister and stop being intimidated by this bunch of buffoons. Carney’s speech in Davos was a wake-up call, and I think this was the turning point

  15. SUPPLY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM cannot be changed. BS on walking out when nothing can be done. Canadian Regime screw Canadians as usual. Best deal for Canadians is to move to America. Canadian Brain Drain. WTH.

  16. Canada could put serious pressure on the US economy if it chose to. We could shut off the electricity we supply to multiple US states, impose export taxes or restrictions on Canadian oil and natural gas going south, and restrict potash exports, which could seriously impact and cripple American farmers and food production. Then there are critical minerals, uranium, aluminum, lumber and countless other Canadian resources the US relies on. Canada has far more economic leverage than people realize. The list goes on.

  17. Canada, the EU and Mexico should have joined forces to say no to the insane Trump tariffs, then we wouldn't be in this situation now. It's a shame that only Canada has a backbone.

  18. You should listen to Carney when he says the old relationship is over--We Canadians are done with the US, we won't buy or travel USA anymore. We will not tolerate the abuse and disrespect- It will take generations to repair

  19. Canada and China should start dumping bonds. Canada did not start this war, Trump did. Mark Carney has never disparaged Trump, whereas Trump acts like a jackass every time he opens his cakehole. We are united, we are elbows up, we support our leadership.

  20. You obviously don't understand. Gordie Howe is the guy that invented the saying " elbows up" because he would smash you in the face with his elbows in the corner. He broke eye sockets. Elbows up Canada!

  21. Canada must place a large export tax on everything the americans excluded from tariffs, oil, gas, potash, electricity and critical minerals etc, 50% export tax, the entire american oil refining system is built on heavy Canadian crude. Hit them devastatingly hard. After that stop all exports entirely and cash in the billions owned by canada in american debt, and their economy will completely crumble.

  22. This Anti America, Trump hater isn't telling the story right. This will 100% hurt Canadians Americans not so much. And if it goes to the auto sector Mexico has publicity announced they would pick up the slack to where that doesn't hurt Americans. This man knows nothing about Americans and our toughness. This man is a lier!!!!
