Nepalese Sherpas Build Stone Trails to Improve Mountain Safety in Norway

Date:

Nepalese Sherpas are utilizing their traditional stone masonry skills to construct and reinforce hiking trails across Norway’s rugged mountain terrain. Each summer, teams of Sherpas build durable stone staircases on popular, steep paths to prevent soil erosion and improve hiker safety. The initiative has significantly reduced the need for mountain search-and-rescue operations on previously hazardous routes, while providing the workers with seasonal earnings that support their families and local communities in Nepal.

  • Nepalese Sherpas travel to Norway during the summer months to construct stone stairways on hazardous hiking paths.
  • The stone steps help prevent severe ground erosion caused by increasing tourist foot traffic and heavy rainfall.
  • Improved trail infrastructure has led to a noticeable decline in emergency mountain rescue operations in popular hiking areas.
  • The masonry work is conducted primarily by hand, using manual tools and winches to position heavy rocks sourced directly from the surrounding landscape.
  • The seasonal wages earned in Norway provide substantial financial support for the builders’ families and communities back in Nepal.

  1. What beautiful workmanship and stunning scenery! The Sherpa's deserve to get credit for not only having masonry skills, but also having the mountaineering skills combined with having a genetic predisposition to being able to work hard in elevations with less oxygen. This predisposition developed over many generations of the Nepalese people. I'm not speculating. This predisposition has been scientifically proven. These are exceptionally high skilled people. ❤

  2. The sherpas have long been highly respected for this in Norway, and Norway and Nepal have had a close relationship since long before this as well. It's really just a positive story all around.
